All of the translators I have encountered have been jokes. Does anyone know of one that actually works.

The only one I have ever used was the Simbolic translator... although it didn't get much use. Have you tried it?

Universal Translator was translating stuff for me yesterday, as was the Q-Trans. The only one I know for sure is the Universal. I have never owned one, but Europeans have tried to communicate with me. Not sure what they were using. Terrible results. Total gibberish. |

I'm not sure that can be helped. The problem is that many languages have a different sentence structure to standard english... and as such, while all the words will be there, they will likely be in the wrong order. I haven't come across a translator that has solved that problem yet.
Another issue is probably slang... we use it, chances are translators don't know the English translation of many slang words from other languages so that could cause problems too. Again, you may struggle to get a translator to solve that, unless you fancy becoming fluent in every language you may have to make do with what is available.
From the limited use Simbolic had from me, i never had any majoy trouble. And it was free i think.

I've used a couple, the Universal produced a lot of very mangled English, but usually just about understandable, although I remember one occasion listening to a conversation in French (in which I can just about manage to order in a restaurant) in which the French version made more sense to me than the English translation. I've also heard from those who speak other languages that the Universal is often very hard to follow when it translates English into another language. A fair number of words seem to go untranslated too, especially when converting to English.
The Simbolic seemed much better, the English it produced was clearer, it seemed to leave fewer words untranslated, and the people I was talking to seemed to understand me better.
There is one I've seen people using, which seems even better, don't know the name but it has a Q at the beginning, something like Q-trans maybe?

I love the Hank Ramos universal Translator 1.8.3.
It takes a knack to say things that are easy to translate. Avoid slang. Avoid typos. Use simple sentences.
Most the translators use the same back end, namely Google.

I use X-Lang and found it to be the best so far. I love that that translates what comes in as well as what goes out
