I'm a newbie, so I can't afford to spend thousands of L$ on a skin ...
The freebie skins I've tried don't really satisfy me. Most of them have too much makeup and/or don't look realistic.
I'm looking for a decent (I know that I can't get an excellent skin at that price!), natural looking skin for 500 L$ or less - and a shape that doesn't make my poor avatar look deformed!
Where can I get those things?
Thank you.

Your best bet is to search for them. Try the inworld search and try these forums as this is a common request. There are many threads started with this very question. Good luck with you.

Well my skin was around 2000L, that's a nice price. And I must say it looks damn good. But there are those that are better. But I can't really think of any nice skins you would get with a good body under like.. 1000 even. Maybe at the minimum of like 800L. Perhaps you can find a skin designer, and try and work something out.
And for the body shape, they're much cheaper than skins. I got mine for 600L, and it's a very, very nice shape also. I got the shape at "Perfect Ten Bodies". Or something like that, and the skin from The Body Politik. Check them out, maybe there's something for you.

Dakota,
Try PanJen, her skins are only 350L and very decent for that price. LOTS of styles to choose from as well.
As for bodies, make your own. There's nothing that these shape makers do that you can't do, all it takes is patience. And THAT, doesn't cost you anything. When I started, I took about 2 - 3 weeks to tweak my avi and I've tweaked her here and there when I've changed skins.
Good luck! Elle

Canimal has very cheap and nice looking skins. I got a female skin there for a female avie for 350L and it looks like it could have easily cost more.

Are you a guy? "MaDesigns" by Maddox Dupont has the best male shapes hands down IMO.
on the downside, last time I ran into a shop of his they were selling for 1k. Sounds like that`s out of your price range.

Free Skin

If you are a woman, the free CS Passport Skin is hard to beat. Looks like a lot of skins that cost a lot, and the price can't be beat (Free!) It's in lots of those freebie packs, or look at The Free Dove. I don't remember which box it is in, but clicking on buy brings up a list of what is in each box. Get some great clothes and stuff while you are there.
I agree, make your own shape.

You don't say whether you're male or female, but if you're under 30 days old I recommend the male and female skin packs at Tete a Pied, and the female skin pack at Sin Skins. The Sin Skins newbie skins have barely any makeup, if they have any at all. I love the freckled ones!
Also try Nora Bodyskins & Fashions, though the female skin might have more makeup than you'd like.
Check out what's on offer at the usual freebie places - the Free Dove, Sara Nerd's (also check her L$50 store), the GNUbie store. Enkythings has a couple of male skins that are really good for freebies.
Beyond that, keep searching and go beyond the first page on the search tab. Buy demos and try, try, try them. Then wait a few days and try them again.
For shapes, I'd say make your own. My (female) av uses the Thin Shape in the inventory Library, modded to make shoulders and hips thicker, add muscle, and add body fat. I've tried free shapes and even bought a few, but have never found another I'm happy with. (Keep in mind, a bought shape will change your face as well as your body. That's been my biggest complaint with most every shape I've tried but my "own".)
But if you must, I liked what I saw at Regency Shapes, and the owner was very helpful. When I was there last she had set out packs with freebie skins and budget skin recommendations for both men and women, too.
Hope this helps.

I'm female. And I just got the free skins from Sin Skind and Tete a Pied. They look really great. They are sooo much better than the freebie skins I've used so far. Thank you for the tip. I might also check PanJen out ...

I just opened up a shop selling shapes. Right now, all are priced at $250L. I created them all and rotate wearing each of them (so they are definitely not deformed)! : )
