Yes, it's been two years since I convinced Fizik to give SL a look. Well, actually I convinced him in Summer 2003, but he couldn't get it to run on his ATi graphics card. I let this cat out of the bag at SLCC, and, well, since it's been 2 years and the distinction of most reviled person in SL has since been passed on to others, I'll now own up to the fact. Yes, it was my "fault." I brought in the outsider who had big dreams for doing new things in SL -- just not in the way most people were ready for yet. Whatever you may think of Fiz, he certainly was the one with all the arrows in his back (as pioneers usually end up with).
I do think many of the changes that happened in SL during that time period were inevitable, and, unfortunately for Fiz, he became the receptacle for many people's anger and fear. Like everyone else who was around during 2003 SL's growth from a small, tight-knit community to a larger, more diverse one was a kind of loss of innocence. I had experienced that loss before in other communities, and it's tough -- but I think because SL was created by its users it was extremely difficult. So while it was heart-wrenching to watch Fiz take such repeated abuse in the forums, both he and I understood the views of the most vociferous users.
SL was growing -- and continues to grow. The issues being discussed in today's forums will be resolved or disappear to be replaced with others. Things change and grow...
Blah, blah, blah. Good god, is this a birthday wish or an elegy for SL days of yore. Someone slap me!
