With the libsecondlife project, we've discovered that many of the limits of SL are in fact, limits of the SL client. A blind eye was seemingly turned to the use of the God Mode hack, but what about outsize prims?

Because of the limits of llSetTextureAnim, I advised a friend to use a single 60x60x0.01m prim for the project she was working on in a private sim. This is technically possible, and doesn't interfere with others' land, or cross sim borders. All the same, I remember creating "illegal" prims was considered a definite no-no a couple years ago.

So what should I tell her? Is this okay or not? And if not, why not?

While a 60x60x60 prim, when properly used, will not kill SL, there are several ways to use the badly, the aforementioned overhang into other parcels being one example. While it is possible to support larger prims and eliminate all of their downsides, it will be a lot of work to fix the problems, and is is very likely I'll plug that hole on the server-side very soon (that is, I'd do it right now if I could spare the time). I'd recommend that she NOT use a 60x60x60 prim since it will break in the near future.

By the way, that would be my advice about any misbug in the system: don't rely on it unless you don't mind your content breaking when the bug is fixed before it is turned into a real feature.
