Unscripted land and emulation of reality.

On a plus note...

eh? if you own the land to put the billboard up, wouldn't you be able to make it run your scripts?

Yes, but many people don't.

I would say this is mostly laziness and emulation of reality, though. Making a vendor then and there makes more sense, but ya'know - not everything that happens makes sense...

Also, one update to a product would mean updating all those billboards. See "laziness" point.

but don't bill boards have the update problem too? i guess not as much?

It takes very little forethought to just slap a texture onto a box and leave it sitting there.

It takes a lot of time and effort to place a script into said box, update it constantly and/or write an automated updater tool, troubleshoot any problems, handle any vendor queries at said location, etc etc.

QED.

Um, is there a reason why you are starting three threads to get away from the first thread you started where you didn't win the argument?

i don't think i lost or won the other thread.

i was just curious about this. why are people just making billboards instead of vendors... the customer must be right there if they see the billboard, if the customer is interested enough to go to the place of the billboard sez... then wouldn't they buy from the vendor?

or why not make giant vendors that also serve as billboards?

it seems natural enough to me.

but jeffrey points out habit and laziness.

i was just wondering.

You've definitely not won any arguments. You responded to one thread about billboards but then had to start 3 more to make the same point LOL. Is that allowed by mods? I guess so.

People make billboards not out of "laziness" but because the cost of updating, maintaining, and deploying vendors is too high for them.

Stoneself, it's a really good point.

I believe the reason people do this is because they have nothing to sell.

They're putting up billboards to advertise other people's products.

I suspect this is where it's going though. Eventually, these billboards will be replaced by things from SLExchange/SLboutique/SecondServer.net

Too bad for rathe :) Though maybe he will be able to sell out / partner with one of them. Doubtful, though.

Billboards are not as common as you think, because they require a decision to use a piece of land, even 16m or 64 m, not for prims, and not contiguous with a whole plot, but just for the sake of

What I've seen of billboards/billboard land fit into these categories:

a) people buying up these small squares thinking billboard places will want them and pay a lot of money for them
b) people with a store or mall or attraction that is near a telehub but not right on it, so they buy up signage space to point to their mall or store
c) people who don't want to have to fuss with a vendor or buy or rent a whole new location but just have some visibility in world, so they put out a sign (I've noticed these products tend to be tvs/videos/radios for some reason)
d) metadverse signs that people make money from

I doubt that billboards will be replaced by SLExchange. After all, it is an immersive world (or trying to be) and people like to replicate RL experiences. All it would take is one sale for some people to justify a billboard.

I like reading billboards, sometimes they are informative and well designed.

Hi ya Jauani!

Well looking at some of the Sanpzilla pics. - seems that's being done now - maybe not a 100 pic, but you know what I mean.

How you be?

two or three well frame posts are all you need. the location link let's interested people follow up inworld. instead, some narcissists amongst us need to post 40 images in sequence of their hoochie hair and their whimsical meaningless puppets.

i really hope cristiano starts charging L$ for the service when it goes live.

i'm good, btw. how you be? :)

Why make billboards?

There are 800+ sims. 30,000+ residents. Do the math.

Word of mouth will only get you so far. It worked in the beta days, those days are over, the world is much too big now. There are hundreds of new users signing up every day.

Find window, even with a better search, will not work. Users don't know what to search for if they've never heard of you or your product. Would you have searched for 'car' over a century ago when you never heard of them or knew that you would ever want or need one? Yet they revolutionized the world.

Vendors instead of billboards?

MetaAdverse provides a free advendor.lsl script that can easily be setup by any advertiser allowing them to make interactive campaigns that can deliver anything, including packages that bill and deliver goods to a user who clicks on the ad. The possibilities are endless, and the opportunity already exists.

:D
