I am clothing and prim shoe designer and I am beginning to make custom one-off versions of some of my items based on people's requests.
While I trust people in general, it seems risky to just drop the item in their inventory and then hope they pay me the requested price. I could ask for the payment first, but I feel like that puts the urden of trust on the buyer and I feel wrong asking for upfront payment.
My question is this: is there someway to send somebody an item (or group of items) that will then ask them for a specific payment in order to access those items?

You can set the item for sale and mark it to sell original, not a copy. You can't restrict the sale to particular customer, but if you are working togther face-to-face you can probably make it work.
The other thing you can do is put the item in a vendor to sell it to them. If the item is no-copy, they will get the item and it will be removed from the vendor's inventory.

Ok, first of all, this thread doesn't belong in the Land and Economy forum. I will answer your question though. If you make a custom object for someone and want to just drop it into their inventory, you can put your item into an object, and make a script that will allow the buyer to take the box out of their inventory and pay it to get the object. Its a little tricky, but I can program it fr you if you wish. it would involve the buyer giving the object permision to take money from them. but it is the simple fact of if the buyer doesn't give the permissions to take money, he doesn't buy it. There are other alternatives to accomplish this as well. IM me in world for more help.

This is what I do.. I make the item. I put it in one of my shopping bags, with the person's name on it. I arrange a time to meet them. Rez the bag, mark it for sale as an original and with the agreed price. They buy the bag and do take. That way you get your money, they get there object and the question of trust will be answered when they open the contents of the bag and see the agreed items in there. *edit* my last statement was only for land. duh..lol anyway, I have prim shopping bags if you would like a copy of one, I will be happy to give it to you. You can put your logo on there and use it, just hit me up in world tonight crap edit one more time...ugh..but where would you suggest this thread to go? is selling not the economy of sl?

Games: That was kind of what I thought I might need, some script like that since often I deliver the item via an inventory drop while the person is offline. I will probably take you up on you offer for help with the script, thanks.
Sorry I though the Economy forum was the place to ask questions about selling things.
Blayze: I tried to make a shooping bag and was unhappy with the results so I am curious to see what you have.

Sure thing... IM me in world..I should be in game around 11:30 SL time. The bag is very cute although I can't take credit for making it. I have found a simple way to make them though. I can show you the bag or show you how to make them fairly easily

You are the designer, you have a reputation and presumably a business in SL to maintain. The person buying is an unknown. If they aren't willing to trust you given that, then why would they trust that what you put in the bag was what they are paying for? When you buy something from a vendor, you pay the vendor first, and then you receive the item. If you don't receive the item, the owner (if they want to stay in business) will give you one, assuming they can verify the money was transferred. For face to face transactions, I don't see any difference. The buyer pays, the person selling delivers. - Jon

- Jon Just because the seller has a reputation and business does not make them to be the most trustworthy. We have seen time and time again in these forums where big name designers make mistakes, don't get back to you, ignores, or just plain forgets. Unless its a designer/creator I know, I am not going to be so hot to pay them up front for something if they demand payment up front. No they don't have to trust what you say is in the bag, but they can go into edit and look at the contents of the bag before they actually buy it. Then they know what you say you put in there is really in there. In a way, that is more secure than a vendor because what if you forget to put something in the vendor bag? You could sell multiple copies of something and not realize that you forgot to include it.

The buyer can't look at it until they buy it. You've still got the same trust issue. If a seller isn't going to give someone a product when the person is standing in front of them, they are just basically stealing from them. Putting a bag down on the ground that has "something" in it doesn't change a thing in the actual dynamic of buyer to seller. Maybe it makes a buyer feel better if they think they can see the object -- I don't know. - Jon

I understand where you are coming from but this is more about making sure that you get paid for the work you have already done. When I do a custom job, as I did last night, I did one portion of the set *the buyer was standing right there*. I made sure it was what she was looking for, then continued with the rest. I put it all in the bag and then set it for sale. In fact, she asked me how much one piece of the set would cost because she wanted to purchase that too. She had looked in the contents of the bag and saw it wasnt there. Its a good thing she asked because I forgot to include that piece. Either way she decides to do it, good suggestions have been made. She can make the decision which is right for her

I always ask for a down payment in advance. That way the customer and I both have a stake in getting the job done and fully paid for. No one has ever balked at paying a percentage up front. In fact, for some reason they always pay more than I ask for.

When I do custom work myself or commission it from others, I always expect an advance up front (between 25% to 50% of the final cost). I have yet to be screwed in doing it this way, but I very rarely venture outside of individuals who I know personally or who have been referred personally by others.
