I have had the "show signature" feature turned off for the longest time because of all the advertising. It really makes the forums neat and clean and, in a way, your comments stand on their own, not propped up by a sales pitch at the bottom. Out of curiosity, I turned it back on and found the advertising is still there on a lot of signatures.
Im not really knocking your right to have an ad on your signature, just curious if you see traffic to your store because of it. Do people tell you when they visit, "Oh I saw your ad on your signature and had to stop in." If we had an in world classified section to search, would you still advertise on your signature?
If you dont use your signature for advertising, why not? What is your motivation when adding a signature to your profile? I guess I been missing a lot of who you are by not showing sigs, but it does direct my focus on what you actually have to say. I am going to let them show for a week or so, but I will probably turn them back off pretty soon because, for me, the forums are nicer to look through without seeing you repeat yourselves in signature all the time.

WOW! You can turn that off? I really need to go spend more time looking at the options. Thanks

Yah, sigs are turned off by default for new Residents too now, I believe. But Siggy, on the other hand, is always turned on.

I like reading people's signatures because it gives me insight on what sort of things they might find funny or nice or cool. Or if they have a store, I suppose. I used to have my store's location and name in my signature but I didn't like it there.

From: someone i like to put quotes in my sig that i find interesting, relevant, or amusing I use my alt for that sort of thing where I put quotes from the ancients. This is a game where you gotta self stuff and get tier paid if you want to hold land. So you need to use every bit of advertising space there is, given it's severe limitations in-game. Everyone who knows me well knows how capable I am of putting a pithy quote from the greats and the classics on here every day of my life, but meanwhile, instead of showing off my erudition I'd like to get my vending space sold so rent my stalls

I understand the free ad concept and thats a pretty tough one to pass up. I dont blame people at all for using it for ads. I am more likely to click on a link leading to a destination of interest than following up on plain info text.

I noticed sales dropped a bit when I stopped using my ad in my signature. I'll be adding a sig advert again soon, but not till after I dust off the cobwebs in my shop from while I was away.

To my knowledge, my forum sig hasn't brought me a single sale As a creature-maker, my best advertising has been wearing my avs around and directing people to my picks when they ask about what I'm wearing. Other people wearing my avs covers the rest. Guess you'd call that word of mouth. Why the sig, then? Eh, dunno. Ad or no, it does serve the standard sig purpose of giving a glimpse into my personality (key words "surreal," "art," "nature" and "Cthulhu," not that I'm such a Lovecraft lover, but I do spend a lot of head-time in the inter-dimensional bleed ).

Maybe you could use a Image/brand consultant Vudu? Make it pervasive; maybe it'll accrue value all on it's own? Hmmmmm...

Mine does in a roundabout way:
(player x) Oh I love your forum sig! (me) Yeah, a gem - buy my shit. (player x) Oh, ok!
