*Rolls eyes*.

Anshe isn't the first. In fact Schwanson floated his proposal but what he did was just float it and wait for the inevitable wikinistas to show up and give free labour, and for the fanboyz to say "Oh, let's get the Lindens to sponsor this and refer to it!"

Bleh.

SO Anshe didn't wait for Lindenz or fanboyz and just did it. Good for her. I will still keep a weather eye on it to see if it gets business thrown to it by Lindens at welcome areas etc.

I still think the way the Lindens have to be fair with this is to make a big billboard in the welcome areas that can take rotating player ads, the way the telehubs are supposed to work.

Panda, I resent that picture.

I hope you are aware of the new laws regarding lewd and indecent cheerleading routines!

We need to sort out the listing stuff, but I doubt Anshe is up to anything underhanded. I don't agree with her on most issues, but I've never seen anybody seriously question her integrity.

I question her integrity but because she is a nameless, faceless, phoneless, addressless (wow thats a lot of maybe not so real words) business that collect RL money from people and her only paypal information for her customers is anshechung.com. When you sell on paypal, I have been a charter member, back when paypal was XBank (anyone remember Xbank?), I know that you have to CHOOSE to hide your information, she could make it public but she chooses not to. That in my opinion makes her business shifty. If she up and pulls out of SL one day she will affect the game for a great many people and possibly cripple it. So I will keep asking questions.

Schwan

Hi, Schwan.

I told the truth, didn't I? You're going to hate me even more. Because the age of the tekkie wiki is waning -- nobody will go on paying for it, like they often don't go on paying for even the best and the brightest hippie utopian communes. I'm sorry, but there it is. The tekki wiki might be good for raising a barn now and then, but you can't keep cutting and pasting is and replicating it to make a world of a million people. Those special, apprenticed, medieval-guilded relationships just won't cut and paste. It's sad, but true.

It would be nice to live in the Middle Ages with every guild selling to every other guild -- and somebody like Prok in the public stocks who didn't like the guild system, bah! It would be nice to live like a Furry Woodland Creature selling to Tom Nook --nice Tom Nook!.

But we live on the huge big international dirty Internet, and it just isn't as pretty as you'dl like it. I guess that's why you tend toward the private island.

You floated an island proposal to much clamour here, waiting for the typical shouts and WOOTS of the fanboyz and fangirlz to give you FREE LABOUR AND FREE LOVE hun in the typical hippie/tekki/wiki commune.

All kinds of earnest -- but showboating types -- came to tell everyone that they would become A FRIEND TO NOOBS.

If somebody wasn't a FRIEND TO NOOBS *then* they got to be one *now* -- especially using Kex's handy-dandy Newb Help Guide.

Someone else helpfully said with the usual breathless enthusiasm, "Ohhhh let's get the *Lindenz* to help us! Hugz Lindenz!" and throw all the business to Schwan and make Schwan and his friends.

And I said, don't let the Lindens do that, because it kills the market of services, it vitiates newbie initiative and pluralism and choices, and it makes that static, privileged content-creator rich world that just goes nowhere but to itself. I realize I'm really a nasty son of a bitch for pointing this out, but these are the realities.

What I suggested -- and God knows it is unpopular! -- is that the Lindens should remain neutral, posting services and goods in a rotation, and that people like you should charge for these services, at least a minimum, and stop all this free stuff that saps the market, prevents it from becoming real (I guess you want it to remain a toy forever) and and just goes on enabling you to be king of the world forever.

Don't think I'm not aware of how some Lindens are only too glad to dump the shores of filtrating newbies on to you, and letting you shift and shake loose the good and the bad newbs.

Like me. You'd definitely want to shift and dump out a newb like me, hmm? That didn't play along?

Anshe, whatever her less-than-stellar FIC credentials (I'm not sure she really has them, but volume can sometimes make up for quality LOL), just did it. She made the island everybody talked about and waited to barn-raised.

And now, instead of being a FRIEND TO NEWBZ and HELPING and giving FREE LOVE and FREE LABOUR and being NICE and POSITIVE, FIC operatives are out slamming Anshe and posting big fat nasty notices on the Linden Hotline. Yeesh.

I still think that Schwan thinks you are an asshole. Good try though!

Actually, the original post was a bit more rabid and vitriolic, and without any of the cogent arguments you cite now. I like your second draft better, though.

I've got mixed feelings on that. As we've seen recently, having your real life revealed to a second life audience can stir up all sorts of strife. I don't begrudge ANYBODY their privacy.

But yes, trusting your future to an anonymous leaseholder is dicey. I recently saw a nicely planned and laid-out rental tract near mine close up shop and go on the market. Were the renters notified in advance and compensated for any losses, maybe relocated to another property? I'd like to think so, but that's entirely at the discretion of the leaseholder.

That's why we need enforcible leases with built-in protection for both landlords and tenants, with enough flexibility to accomodate both month-to-month rentals and "pseudo-sales". Build it into the code, and then we don't have to question anybody's integrity.

Sorry, but in a situation where RL money is being used via Paypal, the seller gives up their right to claims of privacy. There are additional Paypal risks as well - a disgruntled seller (or buyer) could easily get an account frozen by crying fraud. This has already happened with Anshe once - she got Merwan Marker's business Paypal account suspended during a dispute, even though she had been paid weeks before (Paypal restored it). Once you go outside SL and start accepting money, privacy rights and rules don't apply. Full business disclosure is an important part of doing business with someone. I certainly would not give out my paypal information or make a payment to someone I had no information about or recourse with.

That would work if she just had people paying her Lindens in world, but she isnt. She took this all outside of SL, so now we are going to use some FL logic.

She is using a real currency clearinghouse in the real world with real credit card numbers, bank accounts and real personal information. She is presenting herself as a real business in the real world. We arent talking little SL rental macines, we are talking Real world invoices for legal globally recognized currencies. So now we are playing for real, not for pretend. If Anshe wants to pretend that renting from Anshe is no different than buying from Linden Labs she needs to offer some real business information, and that doesnt have to be her RL name, but it needs to be a Business Name, Address and phone number at a minimum. If she doesnt want to do this then she needs to stop pretending she is a real business on the same level as Linden Labs.

I'd go along with that.
But a robust in-game system negates the need to construct a shaky workaround in the first place.

But she does all that. And then some. So honestly, you're full of it. Walk through the steps buying in Ansheland, with all your thousands, and find this out.
