I am a member who likes to edit land on his property and I got to thinking what about an option where you could edit land in a way that you could make tunnels and caves? Other features may include you being able to add water or snow. Right now you can raise and lower or basically level land out. I think this would be a great future addition so all of us can dream a little bigger than what you can do know. Please refer to this thread. I believe the short version was "caving through the world terrain would cause irregular warping of the mesh and be very difficult to account for."
There's also a little matter of how the terrain is currently generated, which I believe is mentioned in that thread. _____________________

There is no way to tunnel through the ground mesh that LL uses in it's simulators. The only feasible way to do this is to dig a hole and cover it with prims using the ground textures LL provides in the Library folder of our inventories.
One day we hope to have a mesh prim that we will accept the application of a small raw file so that we can literally build a piece of terrain. The OSMP provides a terrain prim that works this way. Because LL streams prim and texture data, there will have to be some tight limitations to avoid excessive downloading by every client that happens to fly over the site. _____________________

it would also involve a rework of the sl world... the entire system of land would have to change... and at the rate of new features, it'll not happen any time soon
