I beleive that SL is still a cutting edge game. It is one of the first to allow users to create objects, it has a huge grid and everything is streamed over your internet connection. One can buy land, make and sell objects. Make real money. SL has some great building tools aswell. With the rite textures your building can look very realistic, especially compared to other games such as 'There' for example (no offence to 'THERE' of course).
I have to admit that atm SL is not as Massively Multiplayer as LL would like us to beleive. The more players that are using the grid, the more LAG we get. LL needs to invest some more money in the game. Surely some better servers would do the trick.

Somewhere I read the words 'infinitely scaleable' - recent events surely give the lie to that one?
As for running a business and making money... *hollow laugh* Shall we say that's been problematic for the last 3-4 days and leave it at that?
Good things? Plenty. Which is why I'm still around.

There *are* wonderful things about SL! It would be infinitely scaleable if SL investments were directly proportionate to RL investments. *see previous statement. I honestly believe that the Lindens could not understand or confidently predict the economic complexities they were facing. Complain all you want about not being able to get on, it was actually very simple. Anyone who read the forums was given a statement by the CEO concerning logins. I am 90% confident the people who had trouble tried to close the program when it said "not responding." The result is increased login attempts (overloading the system) when it was merely windows believing the program to have froze. At least you know how much you love this game (for hate only manifests from love), since you fruitlessly tried to login without taking a step back and researching the problem. If you want the flexibility this game offers, expect a lot of bugs and problems, end of story. I, for one, have only played the game the last month or so (set up account then let it sit for 2 months), but I've experienced the growth of enough static (all images, textures, buildings, created by a minority of mod makers and programmers) online games (FPS, RPG) to tell you that the Lindens bit off more than they could chew, and did it with the tenacity of a pitbull. My hat is off to them.

I suppose it all depends on what you want from an Online game. I really wanted some place to build/create a home. A place where I could interact with people online. A place where I could create stuff and share them and see other people's creations. SL does all of this for me. Yes, sometimes it doesn't work perfectly. But that's technology for you.

Hmmm, well you *ought* to be able to use the system (it ceases to be a game in my opinion when it's presented as a potential income source as on the SL website) without having to haunt the forums. An eMail to all users might have been a better idea... I actually did read the CEO statement and felt there was an element of shifting the buck to the users by suggesting the whole thing was the result if inventory bloat. I don't think that was entirely the case. Certainly no one has been doing anything that is not allowed... And most of the time my system wasn't thinking the SL app had frozen - I was getting that cute message telling me that something horrible had gone wrong and would I contact support with my log file, which I did, for all the good that did me! This has been a poorly handled cock-up. Simple as that.

You can run a business and make money. As long as you can log in regular you should been fine. The most likely reason why an SL business wouldnt work is because the residents dont want to buy your stuff. But if they do, then you will make some money. If your lucky, you could even make a small profit I have seen it done.

Buying land is a touch difficult when you can't get to it to check it out.
Selling land is problematic when very few people can get in to see what you have on offer.
Meanwhile the tier keeps running...
And if I were running a casino (shudder) or a store, this would be hurting me too. How many customers do you think are getting in lately?
On Saturday three of us wen shopping and gave up, lag, no tp, constant crashes. Knowing us we might have dropped 10k no problem - instead we went home. That left various sellers llight quite a few L$.
Getting the picture?

Point and case. The elements you seek are the elements you find. If you want a more stable environment or more honest responses go to church (i'll leave the comments, remarks, jokes up to everyone else). And I did not say that you were causing the problem, nor did i say that phil solved it. I suppose I should have explained further. The login protocol is set to handle a certain number of users. If the traffic is heavy, the login process is obviously slower. The problem from my narrow and foolish perspective, was not inventory overloads (though Phil was correct, as I explained, free L gets turned into unexpected storage space) but an overload on the login side. Too many people had trouble getting in, force-closed the app, restarted, re-pinged the login server, froze, force-closed the app, re-pinged again. It's like trying to force sand through and hour glass (plenty of space on boths sides, just that darned bottleneck in the middle). I've seen it before elsewhere.

I don't know how to post new topics so I'm going to rudely interrupt this one... Why after the update do I have 3 SL desktop icons?

Soon enough this log in problem will be sorted out, and SL will present us with another problem. Either LL buy better hardware, or we should accept it this way. It will always be laggy, and full of bugs as its forever changing. But the everyday change is one of the things a like about SL. And change always brings about problems somewhere, somehow,..eh?

One of the most wonderful things about SL is the community, all the people here I've come to connect with on Second Life.
It strikes me how incredible watching a friend build in 3D is and then have something go audaciously wrong with that creation and laugh so hard out of your sides as said creation barrels down on you like a juggernaut and squishes your avatar. One of millions of moments in here, I'm sure.
Creation is so much fun when you can show others what you're up to, even in the process!

There are several people out on these forums who speculate that if LL simply buy better "hardware" they'd be running a better show. Who actually knows their inventory and what SL runs on? Why do we assume they use garage-sale equipment?
