If you allow no access to your island, can you please hide it off the grid. Did you know that those that are on your access list can still see the island on the Grid even if you hide it?

I love to explore, especially new islands to see what is or has been created. However, I don't like tp'ng to an island and getting shot to the edge of it with that constant blue popup window "you do not have access" until I'm able to tp out. It really takes the fun out of it. :(

Thanks in advance.

I agree with you MrsJakal... It used to crash me whenthat happened, i wouldn't be able to tp and i would log out, when i log in again id be in the same position, i saw me not being able to play for days, i just had to wait until they took it off the grid or allowed access before i could get ou of the darned place.

However, this doesn't seem to happen anymore, if a sim owner has restricted access to the parcel, simple switch you av to fly mode, fly up about 15 meters and you will be able to fly abuot the sim and have a nosey :P

Why not negatively rate the owner, with a message explaining why. of corse if they fix it, you can always change your rating of them from negative to neutral, even change your rating to positive! That or just leave them a message. I find most people in second life are friendly and out going, and do not intentionally spam the sim list.

Hiding an access restricted island is only common courtesy to those of us who have been online long enough to know proper netiquette. I agree that most people in SL seem friendly and willing to accomodate the population at large if they're asked respectfully. It will eventually become the norm.

Why would you want your island to be visible on the map at the same time you severely limited access to it? Perhaps there's some reason, other than showing off, that we nonowners haven't realized.

Well just like MrsJ said, most island owners don't know the tools are there or ignorant about them, to limit the access to them, or even let others see it for that matter.

Thats why they're islands :). More control to the user. And yes, if you don't want people coming to see your island, just simply shut it off. You can also select specific users who can access it and who cannot, so you're not totally shutting yourself off to the outside world.

It's just common courtesy besides being shot around and forcing you to relog.

The estate management tools are not well documented, and it takes a bit of experimenting to figure out exactly what they do. I doubt that all island sim owners are aware of the effects of restricting access while the island is visible. And there could be good reasons for having a sim visible but with restricted access.

If you have a problem with the effect on your av, I'd suggest taking it to LL. Don't blame a sim owner for using the tools the way they are provided.

I'm keenly interested in knowing what these reason are.

Do people really spend $980 + $195/mo for a product and not diligently study the feature set and options available to them? I find that hard to believe. Jarod's always telling me I give people too much credit.

Just to make it clear...I was not accussing, insulting or attacking Island Owners. I'm soon going to be one myself. However, I figured that maybe just maybe some island owners might not be aware of what happens when someone not on the access list tp's to their island. If they are aware, then I'm just kindly asking to hide the Island from the Grid. If they don't want to, then no problem. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

As far as the suggestion to neg rate the Island Owner goes, why would I do that? Its their Island. They paid for it, they pay for the monthly teir. They don't deserved to be neg rated for something they choose to do. Do you neg rate all land owners that restrict access to their land? Maybe you do, however, I choose not too.

It's hard to study non-existent documentation. I was shocked at how poorly documented the estate tools are. With what LL is charging, they should have nicely formatted PDFs with exhaustive information, instead of just 2 poorly written notecards.

Reasons? How about you've banned someone from your island for griefing. Or when having a private party, you want people to be able to see the island to TP to it, but you also want to restrict access to keep out the riff-raff. Also, if you remove the island from the map it can take a while for the change to show up on the map, so even if you were trying to avoid that situation it could happen anyway.

Well stomp my foot and colour me green. I agree that there should be some reasonably prepared documentation but that's not LL's style. They're as likely as not to change one of the estate fuctions tomorrow if they please and then they'd have to update all those pdfs.

Of course that kind of flexibility is a feature. Would you rather have the documentation or the feature? BTW, I misunderstood the original post. I thought she was refering to estates that had been existing on the map with restricted access for an extended period of time as though the owner intended for the arrangement to be permanent.

For the record, I stopped investigating estates a few months ago because I kept getting bounced to my desktop. My general impression quickly became that it wasn't worth the trouble to try to explore them without an explicit invitation. Perhaps I was banned from all those places for griefing and just didn't realize it. But what difference does it make to a bunch of estate owners if I don't spend any time on thier land. I'm just one av right?

Ohh I was so guilty of this for the first few days of owning my island. There was documentation which i finaly did get to read but there was a lot to read. I think most new island owners are the same way. They are so happy and exicited that they don't necessarly think clearly for the few days. So naw don't neg rate them, but do let them know your getting bounced. I know I would of appreciated someone telling me there was a problem :)
