5000 m2 of land that's a Sim away from a hub, going for more than the price of two whole Sims?!

I know we have at least one land-happy lottery winner in SL, but really folks.....

Pretty sure this was a mistake and if it wasn't, then whoever wants to pay that much for virtual land no matter how special it is can have it!

That is rediculous...I posted a hotline topic and hopefully a Linden will do the right thing and contact this person...they've got to be thinking that they're bidding $L and not $US.

Usually they're just thinking that it would be fun to mess around with the auctions. I once got beat on a sim auction by someone who isn't even a member anymore! :)

Yes you can retract a bid. If you do this, you pay a small % of your actual bid. Then, the parcel is offered to the SECOND highest bidder for their MAX bid, NOT the portion of their max bid which beat someone other than the auction gamer. :) Interesting how that works eh?

From the FAQ:

Resolving Auction Problems

What if I win an auction but realize I've made a mistake?
Please send an email to land@secondlife.com with all auction questions. If you are unable or unwilling to pay for land bought in an auction, then you will be charged a restocking fee of US$25 (L$6000 for $L auctions).

What happens if the winner doesn't pay for the parcel?
The second highest bidder has the option of buying it for their highest bid. If the second bidder refuses the option, then the parcel will be auctioned again.

Thing is, from the bidding history, there must be at least TWO people making "mistakes"

Hmm, one of those people recently tried to convince me 512meter2 PG would never be worth more than $L1000. I know he was trying to start bidding low, but odd to see the same person bidding those prices.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like I could get some valuable land at a good price. First, I make a reasonable bid on the land. Then, I make an outrageous bid using my alt, which shuts down the bidding. Of course, my alt declines the sale and pays the $25 penalty, and as second highest bidder, I get the land for a good price.

I suppose Linden tracks alts via rl names and credit cards, but that's not really tough to work around.

Because of the proxy bidding, making an outrageous bid with your alt doesn't shut down the bidding - in order for your alt's bid to be more than one dollar above yours, someone else would have to be bidding up the price too. Then at the end of the auction, they would be the second highest, not you.

Yes, and if the top two bids decline, then it goes back to auction.

Ahhh yes... proxy bidding. I forgot about that. Thanks for pointing that out.
