I suppose you could get away with it, but I heard a story of someone who had PG land who built a sort of cellar under the house, and had their anim balls etc down there. Someone found it and reported them to LL. You really ought to be in mature land and supposedly we are all 18+ in SL although I have my doubts sometimes.

First off, welcome to your SecondLife :-)

There are three main sim types available for purchase on the main grid. PG, M and 'War Zone'.

The 'war zone' sims are rare and normal TOS rules about shooting people at random and other general violent behaviour tend not to apply. The land in these sims is very limited.

'M' refers to anything 'adult' in nature excuding acts of random violence. If you want to set up a porn shop, that's fine. However, you must ensure that none of your 'wares' are visible from a PG sim.

'PG' in this context refers to anything that is not specifically 'M' in nature. If you're out in public in a PG area you are expected to mind your language, dress 'properly', generaly behave in a way you'd expect people to behave in RL in public areas. In the privacy of your own home you can get away with a lot more, however you should at least take a few steps to prevent accidental intrusion on compromising situations...

Trouble with basements is you see people below the normal level of land and, damn, I'm just too curious for my own good :p

I have met people who are under 18 in SL and that is one reason to keep such "private" moments private.

I could be wrong, but I am fairly certain that if no one can see you, and you aren't bothering anyone else, that what you do in your house is your own business and not a violation at all, (regardless of what you may or may not have in your basement).

If your house is within "peeping" distance of the people next door though you will have no privacy. In my experience, this is one of the biggest drivers of people wanting bigger lots and bigger houses, the desire for privacy.

The Lindens have mentioned in the past that as long as no one outside your property can see or hear what is going on, they don't have a problem with it. They do expect you to hide or take up your animation sets when your done so casual visitors can't see them. It also means you can't have porn images on the walls or BDSM gear strewn about even behind closed doors. It really isn't about being over or under 18, it's about not being surrounded by sexual images, profanity and the like.

Let the bondage begin!

:p Think of a PG area like you would your home in RL. Do you know that in RL, if you have pornographic pictures or posters on your walls in your home, and you keep the window shades open, someone can sue you for it? Its true! Just becasue you own your house, you don't have the right to display Mature content in open view of the public. If someone does walk by your house and sees your bondage posters strewn across the walls, they can sue you for somehting like indecent imagery in public view, just because it offends them.

The same goes for SL "PG" areas. you can do whatever you like on your property, as long as it is hidden from the public. if you have a basement where you want to have your bondage equipment and such, you must set land restrictions so no one else can come onto your property and go peeping through your house. other than that, you are still pretty safe as long as you don't have Mature content in public view.

As for the Mature land, anything goes! PG land isn't for 18 and under, its for those of us who prefer not to have a porn shop next door to us, or pamala anderson for that matter.

Oh yes, and Welcome to SL!

one problem is that things don't all rez at once. So if you're playing with sex animations in your "basement", or if you have xxx graphics on your interior walls, sometimes that stuff can be seen because your avatars and graphics might rez before all the roof and walls do. (I really don't know what the rules are on that. )

Remember that people can zoom in for a close up on things 90 meters or so away from where their avatar is. There's no such thing as mainland privacy in Second Life.

I was under the impression that in a PG sim, even enclosed items, images, and actions must remain PG in nature. Otherwise, there is no difference from M sims as even there your Pr0n collection needs to be hidden from view from the surrounding PG sims, which means inside. At least on the mainland sims. (Isolated M sims can let it all "hang out" if they wish, I imagine.)
