The "Linden Trees"

I just had a quick chat in-game with Jeff Linden and he suggested I come here and post my idea.

I think that the "tree" option under Create should only create trees that are suitable to the sim you are creating them in.

I hate buying a new piece of land, and having to return all the beautiful "official" Linden trees that are there so I can start building something.

This way, I know that when I'm all done building, I can landscape with "indigineous" flora.

Snow sims would create snow-covered pines.
Tropical sims, palm trees.
Etc etc...

There are times, however, when someone might specificly want to create the other types of trees.

What if one were making a greenhouse or a large tropical biodome in the middle of a frigid icy snowscape. There would be a need to create any kind of tree or plant.

How about an option that we could check that would make the tree/plant tool produce only flora appropriate to the sim we are in to make it easier to landscape in theme?

Leave the ability to create any kind of greenery. Please don't limit our creativity.

p.s. Please allow land that is set to a group the ability for any group member to plant trees and grass. Currently only the land owner can do that. Right now group members can create objects but not plant trees/grass.

Well I still think the DEFAULT should be to create plants and trees that goes with the current sim, but, yeah, I see how people would need to create other kinds.

Yes, a default would be better with an option to access any plant type. It would make it easy to landscape in theme with the option to make any kind of plant. Since the tree making process (using the tool) is random, having a default with appropriate plants would cut down on the amount of trees you have to click through when landscaping in theme.

No, no, no! I have basically landscaped the island with palm trees, but I am looking forward to redoing it all for Christmas with the new snow covered trees!

This is SL after all, don't make us conform!

Yes, I read the whole thread. I should have included the "quote" I was responding to.

I have a folder in my inventory with the original of each type of Linden tree there is, then all I have to do is drag one out and size to my need. Makes it a lot easier than rezzing a lot of random trees everytime you want a specific one.

No you didn't, cause it was decided to let you rez whatever kind of tree you want... which negates your call to not force you to conform. Re-read the two responses previous to yours.

I would like to be able to CHOOSE what kind of tree to rez next, so I don't have to click through them waiting for the tree that I want to appear.

Easy there Aaron. You started a thread expressing your opinion about Linden Trees and now people will respond to it and add to it. Nothing's been decided. I'm sure there are others with similar and differing opinions on Linden trees who will post here, if it's important to them. I thought you brought up some good points. Others will too. It's all good.

Part of the benefit of different people posting the same opinion is that it helps the Lindens gauge how a larger portion of the residents might feel.

It would be cool to be able to choose which tree is active when using the tree tool. Until then, the method Pituca described saves a lot of time.

Which is the method I currently use and thus the reason for the conversation with Jeff Linden in the first place. :) No arguments here... all in agreement... :)

excellent ideas..

- option to use only indigineous trees (default is on)

- option to choose 'active' tree type

- new tree types automatically loaded to your inventory

Why do you even use the random tree tool?
There's only about 13 different types of trees. Take them into your inventory, name them something intelligible, and then you will have full control over your landscaping.

Precisely. The one and only time I've ever used the tree tool was to rez a copy of each one so I could save it back to inventory. I don't even really see the point in it at all, purely BECAUSE it's random. You end up rezzing half a dozen before you get one keeper. So yeah, I guess if you wanted a USEFUL version of the tool, then the suggestions here are fine.

But Eggy's solution is far simpler assuming you manually landscape... and a random tree rezzor containing just the trees that you're interested in planting is far simpler if you have a large area - it's a lot quicker to instantly rez a couple hundred trees and thin out the ones you dont want than it is to rez a couple hundred trees manually.

Aww, shit. I just agreed with Eggy, didnt I? Forget what I said, then.
