I really dislike being forced into having a last name for my online personas and worse yet, having to have one that is not entirely of my own choosing. On top of that, it appears other people can choose the same one and are likely to because of the limited list. Granted, I'm probably more fussy about this than most, but I'm 2 steps into this universe and already not enjoying it because Im not comfortable in my own skin... err name, my skin I can change! The requirement detracts from what otherwise is an entirely creative world. Not having a last name should be a valid option as long as the first name alone is not already in-use. If implemented, please give existing people the option to remove theirs. - Inara

after a month or 100 users have taken the same last name. The last name is removed from the list.

The naming system is largely a relic. It serves three main purposes: 1) Roleplay:... for users wanting immersion. This also makes it less an "alias," as in a game, and more an immersive experience. 2) Pure separation from admin status:Linden last names. 3) Allowing users the right to their name without "bettysuper012653" handles:Obvious. At the end of the day, I feel it should remain simply because part number three would lead to a sense of entitlement if a specific name is reserved without a last name. Especially if that name is "Linden." That, and I'd prefer living without the AIM handles as SL grows - and last names are a scalable system.

You got the one of the coolest of the last names and you're complaining? From: SL History Wiki - Nico is taken from the stage name of Christa Päffgen, commonly known as Nico ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nico) (Mar. 15, 1938 - Jul. 18, 198 , a German-born model, actress, and female vocalist for the American rock band, the Velvet Underground. And, to be technical, it's 150.

I like Byron's idea. I like my own last name -- it's taken from Neal Stephenson's novels, which are fun -- but it would be nice to have the option just to be Ricky.

I'm with Shaftoe. I would have bagged Protaganist when I signed up, but I like Prefect better, I go for obscurity over obviousness. Most of the people I know with a Prefect surname had trouble signing in their first time on SL because they didn't get it.

what if they just kept you main acount and when they looked at your name that you have chosen is there but allow use to change our name bubble at will as for chat aswell sort of like a nick name system.mabey if some one has the same nick name as you put a star or some kind of symbol next to the name so we can tell them apart (chosen throught a preferance or alloing to upload a avater symbol)
