From this convo...

[19:22] Rose Evans: Hi! When you belong to certain groups an IM group is added to your IM. Is there a way to set that so you only get messages from the admins of the group only?
[19:24] Lucy Linden: hello rose
[19:24] Rose Evans: Hi!
[19:24] Lucy Linden: No sorry, there isnt
[19:24] Lucy Linden: that would be good
[19:24] Rose Evans: Oh, got a Linden... Aww, too bad, certain ones are too spammy.
[19:24] Lucy Linden: maybe you can suggest that at the forums
[19:24] Lucy Linden: yes i totally agree
[19:24] Lucy Linden: spam hell
[19:24] Rose Evans: I don't mind the admins IMming me as it's important group info but group chatter? <shudder>
[19:24] Lucy Linden: nods

I put forth the following suggestion, let us have a settings box which we could specify for each Group IM that we only get messages from the Group Adminstrators for special important announcements, and not the huge load of spam, or spam hell as the Live Help staffer named it, which is approperate, that tends to come though on the Group IMs.

The ability to have group IMs received but not flagged up would be nice. e.g you could have a little IM status floater which counts unread IM messages for group sessions that you left opened but clicked "Hide" on.

I like dropping into group chats, what I don't like is having them make noise and causing the IM button to appear until I open the IM window and click on the tab then close it. Choosing hide for a group, would stop notifications (sound and flashing tab) but messages would still be received and noted somewhere more discreet (maybe the menu bar?).
