I was just thinkin that it would be awesome if we had a Classified Ads tab (similar to the event tab) so everyone could post things like if they needed to hire someone, or if they are willing to be hired/what for, or it someone's looking for something, etc. And they'd be able to be edited and removed etc. etc.

Let me know what you think!

That's one of the best ideas I've heard in a while. 2 enthusiastic thumbs up. Wait, my av's thumbs are up too. That's 4 thumbs up!

That said, they're working on an in game search tool for inventory stuff, maybe they should expand it to include that.

Even the Find->Places directory was a step in the right direction and I had hoped that listing fees would cause people to keep the indexing current. I've teleported to a number of listings where there was no store and the land had changed hands since the listing was made. That's not the most gratifying consumer experience.

The issue strikes deeper, I think. The big problem with big databases is keeping their content current. Think of all the websites out there that were set up three years ago "cuz we need to be on this internet thing" and have little relation with the business currently. Insofar as people have things that take them out of gameso that they can no longer run their SL shop, classified ads would be quickly dated as well. This comes partly from SL being a recreation.

As far as the directory listings go, they should at least auto-purge on change of land ownership. But that only gets us part of the way there.

There's an easy way around the problem you point out, Mal. That is to run the SL classifieds the same way every single newspaper in the world runs theirs. When someone places an ad, they decide at the time how long the ad should run.

It would likely be practical to cap all SL ads at 30 days max. The user would decide upon placing the ad whether it should run for one day, one week, 29 days, whatever, but no longer than 30 days. After a month, the user would be free to replace the ad for another month if he or she so desires, but without deliberate action from the user the ad would simply disappear. Problem solved.
