As communication options are becoming more advanced in SL, as well as the emergence of web sites that need keys for validation purposes and to identify gift recipients, it would be nice if we could finally have a functional Name2Key fuction that would provide a users key. Considering that a key can be gathered in a variety of ways (including silently at telehubs to build up massive databases of them), there seems no reason to not provide this function - it is not a security risk and would help make key based functions even more convenient to use.

If it's so easy to collect them, why doesn't someone start collecting them up and selling a diretory? If this kind of thing existed on the web, we could use an XML-RPC script to take a name, ping a server, and return with a key... Except XML-RPC is broken, and not likely fixed soon.
So, why not write a script that collects up keys and sticks them in a notecard? Various little sensors around the grid could take up keys, and then syncronize up so you'd have a sellable list in-world... Except, we can't write to notecards. You know, come to think of it, Linden Lab is probably the only group who could make this practical. In a real scriptibng language, this kind of thing would be easy to cobble together with just a few minutes of screwing around. However, in mother Second Life, scripting language screws you. _____________________

I maintain a database of over 25,000+ names and keys, with an LSL interface to it available. If you would like information on licensing access to the database please contact me, Rathe Underthorn, or Francis Chung in world.

What is this LSL interface like? Will it allow the poor 25000 people whose keys you have collected to be mass-IMed with the latest special offers available only to them?

No. You need either their name or their key to query it. Even if you did try to mass IM though, I'm sure LL would be quick to put a stop to you and your account. There are lot of other beneficial uses of being able to convert a name to a key as stated above. The benefits clearly out weight the negatives since access to SL is regulated to registered accounts only and any offender can easily be banned.

A good way would be to have a scripted sign all over SL, that say could be explained away with some other intent, like marketing, but in reality all it does is gather the keys of every av that comes within scanning range.
But I have no idea who would bother to do such a thing... |
