New Group Notifications - Notify Specific Roles

I have just started merging two groups into one, since the titles and functions can be easily taken care of with the new Group Roles. The only problem I have run into with this is the inability to contact members of a specific role separate from the rest of the group.

For instance, say you would like to contact the group officers or another role designed for staff about sensitive information you don't want the general members of a group to know, basically the behind-the-scenes things you want to keep between people who need to know. Examples, a notification about salary, or specifics of an event in planning.

Before this patch I handled assigning different group titles and tasks by creating multiple groups. That meant the members of these groups could communicate between eachother easily through either the group IM or the proposals. Now with the new group system, I see the roles as sub-groups. I feel being able to use notifications to communicate between the sub-groups (roles), as well as the group as a whole, would provide much more functionality for managing groups.

I'm kicking myself a little for merging my groups since I now have to IM certain parts of my staff individually, but the new features far outweigh this. :)

I'm really interested to see if anyone else has noticed this, and more importantly if anyone else would want the option to send notifications to or between certain roles of a group!

Thanks for pointing out the limitations before I did the same thing. Of course that feature is mandatory. If we loose a level of privacy with the new group features its time to go back to the drawing board and fix the problem. I hope the Lindens realize this befors mass chaos ensues.

Linden Lab Notified-- positive response

I was speaking to a Linden just this evening in Live Help and mentioned a great and immediate need to be able to send notices to specific roles. He agreed it was a great idea and promised to pass the suggestion to the proper parties. So hopefully this is something they'll realize is essential to the Role process and add it with all haste. :)

I'm glad to hear there was a positive response. I should poke Live Help as well. Keep reminding them! :D

Over the last few days since posting this, I've been running into situations where this would be ever so handy, now that a few groups I'm in have a role for just about every task. It would make communication so much easier.

Yes, absolutely. The more people that let LL know this is essential, the faster they'll put it into place. I think they already realize it's a necessity. Now all we need to do is get them to realize it's a necessity now. ;)

I second/third/n this motion, where n is a large integer, hopefully. I'd really like to send notices to the "Officer" role of Live Music Enthusiasts to tell them about gig opportunities and such, but don't want to spam the listeners, who are in the "Everyone" role. Much needed.
