Well one thing that sometimes gets suggested but falls by the wayside for ratings.. is a system by which ratings are made less 'onerous' by having a way negs can diminish over time.
Given how little negs actually mean in the game, and yet how MUCH some very good people care about them, something should really be done...
1) a list of people you've given negative ratings to. Right now as it stands once you give out a rating, unless you remember that person specifically, there is really no way you can ever undo it. We need a (private) list where you can see whom you have rated negatively and at least have the *CHANCE* to reverse those ratings, if you have had a change of heart as it were.
2) time off for good behavior? Even RL traffic ticket points expire, given enough time. So should (at least neg) ratings. Not right away necessarily.. but mabye say 3 months down the road... if during that time you haven't gotten any validated abuse reports say (aka you've been behavin well) or even jus simpler remove -1 -1 -1 from each person every month... that'd help slow the rate of 'attrition' whereby older players jus slowly build up negative points from dealings with griefers at a rate of one every few months give or take.
3) blend ratings back to combined score, or score plus a % positive, or even a 'negs per month' score. Part of the huge stigma of negs is that *EVERYONE* can see every single one someone has... it wasn't always that way.. and the system was MUCH more fair for it... when you couldn't palpably tag people and 'damage them' it was never used as a 'griefing' tool like it is now. Its really not someones business the exact number of negs you've gotten assuming its very low, aka 'vanishing towards zero' and people really should have to be as paranoid about their -0 -0 -0 as they are now.
I have seen multiple instances where someone has had to leave/logout etc when someone else has jus flown by to say hi, when that person had a high neg quotient. I understand we do, as a social group, want to know who people who may grief etc are... but when they can do 'irreperable' damage to someones reputation with 2 mouse clicks... it institutes an overal 'fear' bordering on irrationality on the part of some of the oldest and most respected people in SL, and it shouldn't.
People shouldn't have to play SL in fear that someone may not like their hair color and irreperably hurt their reputations. *good* players have even gotten so frustrated with the system that they just don't come on much anymore after they were senselessly/needlessly negged by someone who doesn't even know them. That kind of thing simply shouldn't happen in a 'matured' social space like SL seems to want to be
