I think it would be extremely helpful if we had an in-world painting utility. WE can build anything in the imagination, but to texture it requires an outside source. I would find it a miracle to be able to texture in game. For example, on an avatar that I have built, let's say I want the base color to be blue and then black markings. If I had a pencil/paintbrush tool that would allow me to draw the texture on the object, without having to map it, well that would be amazing. Just an idea that I would really like.

Vote against. Plenty of resources exist that do not require LL to waste time by implimenting those systems into a client that doesnt need painting tools.

Also this has been requested before. Please browse through the current feature suggestions via the Search link at the top of the page prior to posting new topics if at all possible. By your creation date i see you're new and might not be aware of the search feature.

i appreciate your posting of your opinon, which is, just that. Thank you for sharing it, although I disagree.

Also, I appreciate again your good intentioned help about pointing out the search feature. I may be new, But to class me as totally ignorant would be poor judgement. Although, I have no doubt there are those who misuse the forums. I wish to not count myself among them.

I did use the search feature. I tried several key words 'paint,' 'in-game,' 'feature,' 'applet,' and a couple more in a few varied forms. You will forgive me for not searching through the 200 search results I got with many of those won't you? I did search through the first 2-3 pages, mostly finding the same threads. So I do apologize for being redundant with another similar topic, of which I still think would be helpful. But I thank you just the same, and I do hope you won't take this as sarcasm, for that was not how it was intended.

You know what, though -- a rudimentary paint program in-world (on the level of Microsoft Paint, nothing more sophisticated) could be extremely useful.

How many times have you wanted to do a quick-and-dirty sign, or something, and had to go to Photoshop or similar, create a texture, import it...

The ability to create a prim, select a face, and "brush" a desgn or type words on it (maybe a simple 16 color choice, or just using the existing color picker interface) and even just a limited subset of fonts, similar to what you find on websites that generate simple banners and such, would be awesome for things like "The party is over here" signs or whatever... think along the lines of things you would create with poster board and magic markers in Reality.

You guys realise that if they did this it would actually be implemented in the client, and uploading the resulting texture would still incur an upload fee. Might as well use Paint.

For making signs, I'd much rather have llApplyText(string text, integer face, vector offset_and_angle, vector color, integer font, float size);

This would create a new primitive parameter, [PARAM_TEXT,face,text,offset_and_angle,color,font,size], downloaded to the client like the existing llSetText(), and rendered in the client by "baking" the text into a temporary copy of the texture on that face. The client would render that version of the texture on that face.

MUCH lower overhead on the server, MUCH lower bandwidth.

It would be fun to whip out a whiteboard for kicks and sketch up ideas with a SL friend without having to find a program or website. I would LOVE this, even if it cost to upload the end result

A shared drawing surface would be cool.

Argent's text on a prim would be nice too.

Html on a prim but with the html being in a string in the LSL script might be nice.

No, not necessarily. I'm talking about something completely new, that would create color on the surface of a prim directly, like the color picker does, not creating a texture.

It's the difference between painting a wall and applying wallpaper.

Unfortunately the display engine doesn't work that way. If you want to put paint on a prim, the only way to do it is by applying a texture map to the prim. You can't "paint directly on a prim" because the prim is a mathematical formula, and it's only translated into triangles for rendering once the equation describing the prim has been downloaded to your computer at home.

They'd just ding you for making a new texture anyway, so you might as well use The Gimp (free and cross platform), Dogwaffle or any of a number of free paint programs to do your texture work with. Nothing Linden Labs could do could make a useful paint program to compete with the likes of these and still be embedded directly in the client.

I doubt that an "in-client paint program" would work like that. It would be more like the script editor, except with an upload charge when you hit "save".

To handle real-time whiteboarding they'd have to continuously download texture updates to every client. Given how badly they download static textures I wouldn't hold my breath for this.
