Ok, so I'm sure someone has probably already thought of this, but I'm putting my two cents' worth in anyways. I'm just starting to build in SL, and one major problem I've come across is the simple act of trying to build in-game. Either people try to IM me all the time, or the sim I'm in is so laggy I get frustrated, or I can't get "force sunset" to work so I have to relog in order to work with good lighting.
Is there a way to make an external 3d program based on the SL engine? A program where developers could create objects on their local computers without the restrictions of being in-game, on a server half a country away. This program would export objects directly to the user's inventory when they're finished or to files that could be uploaded like textures/sounds/animations. That way extra functionality could be added to the process of building with the current set of prims, without compromising in-game performance. A few examples would be: - a better coordinate system that would allow for more symmetrical building - a thumbnail-browsable texture library - the ability to save parts of an object as a shape to use in other objects I.E. a propellar or wheel - the ability to build a library of "stock" shapes and objects without cluttering your in-game inventory
Anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions? I'd love to hear from you, even if you think my idea's a crock of...well you know what...

Wow man, that's a killer idea. I'd love to see that implemented too.
And not to hijack your thread, I'd also like to se an external lsl editor as well. It would be a little building program, complete with the capability of having scripted objects ^.^
If something like that was made, I'd probably never be online lol

I too have wished for an out of game editor, so I could build while riding the bus, traveling, waiting in a doctors office, etc. Where I don't have internet access.

If I take the time to parse the code for it, you mean. I'm still caught on how I want to transfer objects to and from Second Life. The chat buffer is one solution, but I do kinda want to avoid it. Same with email. If that happens, it won't be until, at best, the summer. I already have several projects I'm keeping up with now, nevermind other obligations. Thanks for noticing, though!
