As a builder and scripter (and relatively new), it's not always immediately obvious to me what the proper set of permissions and script choices are. There have been a number of times things have worked perfectly for me (and for others trying out my copy), only to break in various ways when owned by someone else.
I have started using llResetScript() in the on_rez event, but that alone isn't sufficient..... at least, not with my current understanding of LSL (which I have no doubt needs improvements).
What would be great is to pretend -- only for the sake of testing objects I myself have built/scripted -- that I'm not me. Be able to work with my object as one of two scenarios:
1. Pretend I'm neither the owner nor the creator.
2. Pretend I am the owner, but not the creator.

Good idea, but in the mean time, you can always create an alt for this kind of experimentation. It can be a little annoying to switch back and forth between accounts (unless you have 2 computers), but it works.

I certainly subscribe to this post, my BIGGEST problem with ALL scripts is exactly figuring out what goes wrong when I give objects away, even if they are fully-mod I'm crammed full of wondrous devices I can't sell because I can't fix them. Just one works... barely And the strangest thing about it, some of them have similar structures than other working scripts, and still they don't work. One of them, for instance, I have rewritten COMPLETELY three times over (!) and it STILL doesn't work! Yes, I sometimes use an Alt to check things out for me, but it's a pain in the a**, event when using 2 computers. To give you an idea, I added debugging on ALL states on one object, and it seems that I managed to put an object into a "invisible" state (!!!) when giving it to my Alt. Wow! So that's what is happening. Of course, if the object is into a state that doesn't exist, it's very, very hard to put it into a "valid" state again Debugging this is extremely difficult and I surely would appreciate a "not me" flag somewhere to help out the debugging...

markov--- if you ever catch me online and want to test something out (not sure if that helps), just IM me. Maybe there should be a group created for in game testers? Build/script contributions are what make SL worth playing. I would have no problem devoting free time to this. Maybe something like this already exists right under my noobish nose?

I support this request in full.
There have been plenty of times it would have been nice to have this. It could be a setting in the world menu that would be a checkable item. "Treat all objects as if next owner". Have it pop up a button on the bottom edge to disable it; like IM, busy and release keys. This of course would have to be built in so that it would effect scripts and nested objects (so you could make sure your permissions were properly set on your bullets)

Testers...
09-27-2004 19:15
I am a *terrible* coder, but I've found myself looking at someone else's code and saying "There's your problem." How I do it, I have NO eartly idea. Can't write a good script to save my life, but I'll whip yours into shape in a hurry.
Might just be that "second pair of eyes" thing, too.
Testers would be a good addition to the game.

I'm like that with Christopher Omega... We always dig into each other's code, shooting down bugs and looking for stuff to optimize. If you want to be a good scripter don't be a loner. Pair programming is heaps more fun! Gwynny, you are very welcome to bug me for help whenever you need it

From: someone 1. Pretend I'm neither the owner nor the creator.
2. Pretend I am the owner, but not the creator. what a good idea! I'm lucky in that I have a friend who is my beta tester! But sometimes even that isn't enough.
