You'll still make errors, but the number and severity will be vastly reduced. Further, when you upload - you do get a preview window, which allows you yet another opportunity to review your work before commiting that $L10.

Upload fees are there to limit the number of uploads, not to make sure you upload the correct thing. Whether you upload a messed up texture or not, it still takes storage space. Actually I'd like to see upload fees increase as the texture size increases, so that people don't upload large textures for things that don't need them. something like 128x128 or less 5L 256x256 10L 512x512 50L 1024x1024 500L 2048x2048 (why is this even an option??) 10000L

Seldom used textures in my inventory are taking up server space. Since server space costs me nothing and uploading costs, I'll keep taking up server space rather than upload the textures when I need to use them. So reducing the upload fee will actually reduce my inventory.

Removing seldom-used textures from your inventory won't remove them from the asset server, because so long as a single prim anywhere in world has that texture on it... it has to stay.

Can they even purge?
03-20-2006 17:00
Does anyone know if they even purge completely unused assets? Seems like that would be a monumental tasks to ensure any particular asset key wasn't used anywhere in any sim anymore.
Disk space being so cheap, and CPU so relatively expensive, I wouldn't be surprised if they kept everything.

Disk space being so cheap, and CPU so relatively expensive, I wouldn't be surprised if they kept everything. I think there's a feature request running around as well as a large discussion on how best to FIND unused assets and remove them. As for this thread, upload costs exist to provide a sinkhole in the SL economy (along with rating, only L$2 of which is destroyed, the other L$23 goes to the person you rated) so that the L$50 and L$500 that get added to accounts each week doesn't dilute the value of a L$ so far as to make it worthless. Real money gets destroyed after so many years in circulation. L$ doesn't have that kind of existence, so there need to be ways to remove some of the money from the world to balance the money coming in. I am up for pricing uploads by file size though.

If during the course of building and experimenting with textures (because what it looks like in another 3D app or in PS is not the same as what it might look like in SL) the texture winds up never being used, then there's no reason not to purge it. Furthermore, LL could provide an incentive to reduce textures (e.g. similar textures which could be consolidated and only one kept to be used in-world).
I'd like to see LL refund the upload fee or a portion thereof for textures users request to have removed and which are not in use. It's a a win-win-win afaic. A win for the user. A win for LL who regains disk space. And a win for other users who have to stream excess content that could otherwise be consolidated.

I see nothing wrong with returning a partial of the upload fee for a texture that is removed from the asset server. The problem is finding: 1) a way to find unused assets 2) a way to give money back to the person who uploaded an asset that was purged from the system 3) a balance of cost and refund for uploads so that the economy remains stable

It sounds like you're thinking about a passive system. I'm thinking active. People would submit unused textures in the same way they upload textures. That eliminates the problem of a) finding them, b) refunding since it's the person actively submitting the texture they originally uploaded, and c) economic balance since the money goes right back to the person so they can use that money to upload another texture or use it elsewhere inside SL.

I'm not sure it would solve the problem of finding them. I don't know how the asset server works with textures. *Shrugs*
