A new option for the object permissions to allow an item to be copied and handed out freely but under no circumstances resold. I find it realy annoying that something i have made to be free to the community turns up being sold by others. I do not mind spending my time to make something and then give it away freely. I do however mind spending time to make something then have others making a profit from it! this needs to be fixed, it is absurd that i have to watch items i made being sold with no recourse for action. edit: i'm blind and missed the post below

I cannot agree with you more LA. The creator of a script should have total control of the destiny of that script. And if it is intended to be open source and free, no one should be able to profit from it without your permission. A brilliant suggestion, which I totally support. I have also elected to give this thread a 5-Star rating of Excellent.

Well there is a problem here because if it will be open source whats to stop someone from just copying the text out of the script and putting it into a new one

There are two different options here; free with no re-sale and open source.
Anyone who releases their objects as open source will take the risk of allowing others to make replicas and offer them as closed objects. The original creator would need to include language with the original open source release that could be used to hold the unlawful copier, accountable.
However, I agree that a "Freebie" permission checkbox would be a great new feature. The objects scripts needn't be modify enabled for this, yet the object could still have copy/mod/transfer and freebie permissions checked. Once that option is checked, the sell price wouldbe locked at L$0.
I suppose problems with the above solution could be the fact that others could drop the freebie into box contents to avoid the sell price blockage. Also, though the script might be no-mod, a person could recreate the prim object, and drop the copyable script into a non-freebie replica object.
I can't think of any way for Lindens to code a solution to this. Even if a giant red "FREE - NO SALE" stamp is apply all over the edit windows of freebie objects, there is no way to prevent others from copying these objects by hand.
So, I'm thinking out loud here, but maybe a better idea would be a financial penalty against proven violators. Anyone caught to be selling freebies could be fined several thousand L$'s. If they don't have the L$, future payments are withheld. The problem there would be in proving the items were genuine freebies.
So, I have another option, quite possible the very best option. Offer easy access to a list of submitted, proven, tested, approved genuine freebies. From there, it could go one of two ways, either Linden runs the program, or a group of residents runs it. I don't imagine there are THAT many freebies created everyday, so maybe a Linden could be assigned to approve these freebies. If that's the case, the freebies would need to meet some requirements, namely they shouldn't be blatant advertisements and they shouldn't include trojan-horse type scripts. A freebie tab could be added to FIND and items listed there.
The resident-run freebie program could be managed the same way online SL shopping services are run. Residents would be able to search for any item, and have it delivered to them in-world. Another less user-friendly resident-run option would be to have a simple website list of freebies and the in-world location to find the freebie.
Shoppers could run a freebie-check before making purchases by looking at one of these services. I think any service would need the freebie verification stage to be viable. Either a group of residents would certify the objects as genuine freebies, or a Linden could.
