SecondLife is a platform where you can create almost anything you wish, and get social. It is not a game where the goal is to achieve money.
If you came to SecondLife with money as a goal, you must have missed something in the newbie orientation. All in all, making money is the same as in RL - get to know the people, start creating for yourself. Find a need (demand), and fill it up (supply). Then you'll make money. Thats how it works... not really that hard, concidering that unlike other systems (cough) there's no rael costs involved other then possibly paying for land or some market space. Just remember. Money is not the goal. The moment you turn it into your goal in-world, you miss out on what SecondLife is all about... big time. |

Well, since my grammar joke apparently went unnoticed by most, and possibly misunderstood by some, I guess I should address the actual topic.
![]() Sam, have you looked at the employment forum? There are tons of jobs advertised. A truth I think you should embrace though is that there is no such thing in RL or in SL as a job that doesn't require you to sell something. Engineers sell design ideas. Farmers sell their harvests. Reporters sell well presented accountings of daily occurances. Factory workers sell skills. Everyone sells every single day, regardless of their job title. When you apply for a job, ask someone on a date, negotiate the price of a car, apply for a motgage, or do anything else you can think of that involves interacting with people to acheive a desired result, you are selling. Sometimes you might be selling a product, but all the time you are selling yourself. I've been teaching sales 11 years now, and I can promise you the phrases, "I don't want to sell anything," and "I need money," almost always go hand in hand, just as they have for you here. People who sell with confidence make money, and people who reject the notion that they should sell never do, whether they're aware of it or not. That's just how we function as human beings, and it's as immutable as breathing. If you want money, get good at selling whatever it is you have to offer that people would be willing to pay for. That could be a product you make, a skill you possess, a personality trait you have, an ability to do work, anything that makes you worth more to another person than their money is worth to them. People are people, whether they be in SL, RL, or any other L. For them to pay you, you need to convince them they should, and that by definition means selling something. _____________________

Just for fun, this thread of old immediately comes to mind...
/130/7c/36671/1.html Hi, I have had a great idea. The kind of idea that'd solve several problems (or perceived problems). Why not create a coal mine where newbie could go and mine coal in exchange for Lindens? This way, the grumpy capitalists couldn't complain that people get money for free (like with money trees), newbies couldn't complain there is no job they are qualified for with their no-skills. Mining for coal doesn't have to be boring too. With the introduction of a "mining skill", via the use of an attachment a la Darklife, mining could become an addictive threadmill (numbers that go up are addictives). Add to that various kind of pick and shovels only accessible at certains levels that reflect their status ("hey baby, look, I can use the gold pick! - Ohhhh, you'r coool!" and people will fight to work in the mine !The money extracted would have to come from somewhere though. I think donations from wealthier player could be used, just like with the money trees. A small marketplace near the mine could be built too, the guaranteed amount of client provided by the presence of newbies would make it attractive to seller and the rental price could be higher than other malls in order to fund the mine. (the seller would know part of the money he pays for rental will land in his clients pocket, so it's not really a loss) With all those newbies around, a broth.. a "club" could be built nearby, with escort offering much needed "relaxation" to sore newbies after a hard day work. What do you think ? _____________________

That mining for coal thread "Why not create a coal mine where newbie could go and mine coal in exchange for Lindens?" reminded me of this scam from an enterprising EVE Online player who figured out that mining asteroids was not the path to fame and glory:

Amazing story. Although the author's lack of conscience made me more than a bit sick to my stomach, it was still a great read, quite well written, and very entertaining. Excuse me while I go pray for my immortal soul after having enjoyed that wonderful tale of pure evil. ![]() _____________________

Actually, I think it would be a good start for new players if Linden Labs provided a temporary employment agency to make things for the world. Not only would it be a great way to introduce new players to the basics of building, scripting, etc., it would be a venue through which everything from tutorials on accomplishing it to standards could be introduced.
One could start out building basic shapes and texturing them for use in Linden built projects (thereby reducing workload on the LL side), or creating basic scripts (or just modifying them for different uses), or placing items/building Linden structures in the world (permissions for temp work would have to be designed/implemented). A real progression from beginner to intermediate could happen, after which a new player would truly be ready and able to move on to bigger and better things. Another variation on the idea would be for LL to create an in-world job listing. This would be a great help for all residents, as the number of people who come to or read the forums is still but a small slice of overall metaverse population. _____________________

I think af Find window option for jobs would be nice, where people can post job descriptions, requirements, and salary. People looking for work can simply type in one of their interests into the search window to find a job.
