I belive xml-rpc uses port 80 by default however unless i am mistaken many people will not be able to use it if this is the case as many ISP block outgoing port 80 so that people can't run web servers. If possible it would be very nice if you could use non-standard ports for this.

8080 or maybe a userdefinable port would be cool

It's 80 as it runs over HTTP.

I will be offering shell accounts on my SL gateway server to certain citizens, after XMLRPC is enabled. (links to their home dir from /var/www/).

If the organization is strict enough to block outgoing 80, it's unlikely that there are other ranges of ports open and available to simply allow a workaround on http I'd think. Not being a real firewall admin though I could be mistaken.

You can probably specify something.dyndns.org:45678 if you want.

BTW before I start writing server side code, does this even work yet? I saw a reference regarding "framework in place updates soon..." or something like that. I've got my HTTP enabled DBs and everything ready to go though :).

AWell you can't block all ports or you just can't use the interent. They just want to block high volume webservers, and making people go to weird ports for web serverics doesn't really work well so it sort of works. I have used plenty of other ports trough thier routers, just port 25, 80 and a few others happen to be blocked.
