I think for those if us not always on a broadband connection and aren't always on a computer that can handle SL (Laptops and such), LL should make an external IM client. This way, when we are not in the most optimal of conditions, we can still keep in touch.

There are several IM clients in development, all using the libSecondLife project.
The problem is that the SecondLife protocol changes frequently, and until we get a working auto-updater, we won't be able to offer a "shrink-wrapped" version of an IM client. However, if you're even marginally technically inclined, it's possible to download and compile libSecondLife and my IM client. LibSecondLife's home page is http://www.libsecondlife.org/ . My IM client can be found via the forums at http://www.compiledreality.com/forum or on my Open Source page at http://www.compiledreality.com/opensource |

And why should we go around the system, when the system really should have something like this already implemented.

Look at this another way... it would cost Linden Lab something like $10,000 in man hours to develop a desktop IM client.
The libSL people are doing it for free (and, in fact, have several). If you were a business, which way would you do it? ![]() |

Requiring that you connect with a second life name and password I hope? Or that would open the door for spam bots all over the place, without them being traceable to someone in world. Not that we need spam-bots to get far too many messages, just join a group =(

If they used the Jabber Protocol you would just need the Jabber Plugin for Trilly (and have Trilly Pro, as while Trilly Basic comes with the Jabber Plugin, you can't use it) and then configure and connect. GoogleTalk uses the Jabber protocol, btw.

I'm sure LL has some sort of protocol already implemented for inbound and outbound messages. thats how the IM to Email system works, and why every character has a specific code. I've tried to reply to email IMs to no avail. The system is already there, why can't we use it? |

1990 is the proposal, give it some votes if you want SL messenger to be a reality.

Hey Joro <3
I've heard multiple times that they're trying to slowly begin a shift from SL's proprietary internal IM protocol to the jabber protocol. Whether or not this will happen in the near future is up in the air, but chances are when this happens will be the first time we get to IM into the game from outside of it. There's no point in developing an external IM client that will be outdated in the forseeable future. |
