Like a lot of you I love to shop in SL. As a very poor homeless av its super stressful to buy something without knowing exactly what it will look like on me. I have bought a few things based on the sample pictures only to have major buyer's remorse after seeing it on my av.

Besides, 90% of the fun of shopping is trying wild stuff on.

I know lots of vendors do the funky version for $1 but even with those it can still be hard to get a real feel for what something will look like.

So here is my idea for LL, objects need an optional "Try On" permission.

When this permission is set an object can be transferred to a player with some clear indication that its a "Try on" and at that point the complete object becomes available to the user to try on. The object would not be modifiable (maybe even the "edit appearance" menu is disabled if you are wearing a "Try on";), transferable or copyable.

So here is the trick, a "Try On" object would only exist in a user's inventory for 2 minutes then disappear.

This would give vendors a safe way to have customers try on / try out wares without having to make special versions.

To minimize possible cheats a "Try On" object should only be able to be sold for $1 - so no vendor could pretend they were selling a real item.

I can foresee some issues with design / texture theft but since people can do that anyway by screen-shooting the display signs I would hope that would not stop vendors from offering this.

What does everyone think? Has this been suggested before?

I would hope that from a coding standpoint it would not entail a lot of original development, just and extension to the permissions system.

There have been a number of 'Try before you buy' requests. But I rather like the way you are proposing implementing this. At least for clothes, it makes sense.
