ok I spoke with a Linden and was told to post this on the forum
you know when people choose to have someone listed as their partner they have diff last names - there should be an option that if two people marry - mate ect - that they can choose to have their mates last name or not i can understand friends being partners and having diff last names but when two people choose to marry mate ect - having the same last name means alot and IF in the event they divorce - split ect there should be an option to go back to their original last name - like you do in real life and mebe charge a fee for doin such jus like you have to pay to go back to your maiden name in the real world is just a suggestion i think would please alot of people - just not everyone carries it out and takes it to the Lindens like say for example: you partner with someone and have diff last names the fee would be say 100L ( not sure what actual fees are ) if they chose to marry/mate and have the same last name it would cost 200L and if they divorce/seperate and the female wants to go back to her original name it would cost say 300L cus some people come into game with a partner some do not some meet someone after they come in game so they dont have the same last names

Instead of enshrining a RL convention in SL, why not just a feature to change your name? If people want to take their partner's last name, or a hyphenated name, they can do whatever they want. I've known couples that take an entirely new last name as a result of their nuptials. It would be more useful if more general.

Last Name Changes-- Woot All For It

I agree it should be more general. For the simple fact that people do have kids in game. You would want your child to have the same last name as you and your significant other right? If this change were only restricted to partners.. then the kids will be left out..so yes. make it more general!!

yes I agree with this idea and in fact made a proposal for it (833) just the other day. It garnered 140 something votes in 24 hours. But I never even thought of the kids thing. What a great addition to that. I hope we can see this come about. After all it is our second lifer and should be as real as possible.

(There was something in the welcome area to that effect, what ever happened with that? Anyone know?) I'm not sure I'd like the idea of taking on a pre-existing last name. Certain last names have a very specific "moment in time" and there's just something about history and having some form of SL culture that makes that idea seem less than ideal for me. I wish I could explain what I mean in a way that makes sense to someone other than myself. I started in late 2004 and the person I'm sort of seeing started in late 2002. That's a huge gap in "SL time" and I wasn't there for all the things that happened in those years. I don't belong in that time, I wasn't there to help shape the world. I'd feel weird having the last name. Or seeing a newer member with a 2003 name. Also, were this put through I think the cost should be much much higher. And possibly only available if paying in $US. -Sun (of the not making sense, but really liking game history)
