What's the latest on being able to set permissions with "llSetInventoryPermMask()"? Is there any kind of automated work-around for setting the Permissions to items I already own?

No, there won't be any kind of way to automate it until they either finish the feature, or add a bulk permissions menu to the Inventory window.
The Lindens haven't given any indication that llSetInventoryPermMask is being worked on, and I just thought up the bulk permissions thing.

If I recall from what I've read, there were originally ways to automate permissions in this manner. They were, however, removed due to the potential flaws and abuse that might result.
So it's doubtful we'll see this any time soon.
