here's a thought.. there are a few clumpsout there of more than one private sim. enough sims in a clump and it could be a continent..
..so why not encourage this? give the ability to name the continent as well as the sims?
for instance:
Continent: Nova Albion Contains Sims: Grignano, Miramare, Sistiana, Barcola (i know that's not a continent, but it illustrates my point the best)
(which brings up the point that SL proper still doesn't really have a unique identity. the main continent is called...? Second Life? Lindenworld? something else?)

all the really intelligent people know that it's called fate. i don't know what everybody else calls it.
the larger continent might better be bordered and named in pieces. the original (pre 1.2) grid was actually refered to as the southern and northern continents back in the day.
here's self gov't for ya. after this feature is implemented, residents in contguous groups of sims could apply to have their sims grouped and named as a "region" or "county." popular application rules so those that don't vote, or get outvoted, will just have to deal.

Island grouping thoughts

Well, consider that a lot of people that have a private island want a "private" island. They don't want to see the goofy giant spider that someone next door has created on the island next door.
Groups that have multiple islands already have the option of connecting them together or placing them adjacent to each other to make a larger area. You'll notice several clumps like that.
I do agree that currently the islands shotguned all in that area on the left of the map doesn't look great. But then again, its just a map, so maybe no one cares.
I may be mistaken, but there also seems to be a policy that private islands can NOT be adjacent to the mainland. I think this is a mistake. You should have the option of buying a private (non auctioned) island and have it adjacent to the mainland, but the agreement would be that the land layout would have to match the mainland layout. ie, snow, tropical, whatever. You would only be able to do limited terriforming.
This would allow people to have private islands where they want, and still be part of the SL community if they wanted.
A friend and I are currently looking at getting a private island, however we want to be part of the SL mainland world not out alone disjoint from everyone else. We were disapointed to find out that we wouldn't be able to be close to everyone else.

I like Cybin's earlier post somewhere about re-naming Second Life.
I think Second Life should keep its name. But Second Life is NOT the physical virtual world that we roam around in. Just as you wouldn't say that Earth is Life. Second Life is the experience....the world is....?
And I know that it should have a name. People always describe themselves as "in-world"? What world? What's its name?
I nominate "Parios" as the name of Second Life's world. This is adapted from Cybin's post in that other thread.
Pario is apparently Greek for Creat, Give birth to.

Oceana

This is the name Higbee, Princess, Pituca and myself decided upon for the 3 sims we have connected.
To do this we had to contact the Lindens and each sim owner had to agree to the connection.
We have a couple of basic rules: We don't say what happens in each others sims (but we do cooperate) and for future sims to connect to any sim that is part of Oceana, we must all agree that it is ok.
Pituca and I did try several times to get a sim that was part of SL Grid. But we were told it was not possible.
Love the idea of continents and of naming the SL Grid and naming areas of it too. Would make finding a sim or group of sims so much easier. After all, we do not just say that we live in a city in RL. We name the country, state, etc... to help locate the general area.
Maybe there is a need for an SL zip/post code now the world is so huge?

thank you, Emmy. Garth, that's awesome! now, that's exactly what i was talking about.. except, add to it. make it officially designatable. basically, it would go like this.. hypothetically speaking: i own private sims: Zimbo, CallaWalla, Dingo, and Leeroy i join this together under the "country" name: Mambolia now, when you looked at the map, it would show the four sims with their names as normal, but the difference would be that the name, 'Mambolia', would be shown.. say.. in the top left of the group of sims, just above the sim boundary. and when you were in Zimbo, you would see this in your SL location bar.. thingy..: Mambolia: Zimbo: Cybin's plot o' fun (coords) so good on ya, Garth and company!!! Unhygienix, i like your suggestion! "Parios" sounds great.. of all the ideas i've heard for naming SL, this has shot right to the top of my faves list! (i'm a sucker for names based on etymological roots from foreign and/or dead languages) - and yes, everyone, i'm perfectly aware that this will probably never be settled and would be too weird for anyone older than a week or two to start thinking of the mainland as anything but 'the mainland in SL, where we're in-world'. all very non-specific, yet it's what we're used to. ..i still like Parios.
