I have a plot on the mainland, and after having held a few events on a private island (the owner was able to set permanent night for the event) I got kinda spoiled by the feature.
On the mainland... day and night cycles past and unless you use the mouse moves sun feature in the debug window you'll get the same cycle everyone else has.
I want to host an event on my land that REQUIRES night. Yet though our land tools we don't have the option to override the setting.
My suggestion: Allow everyone to override the day/night on their own parcels of land. It would be night in your own little part of the world, yet a few steps over yonder in another parcel it would be daytime.

This makes sense to me. It's not like other things aren't impossible! (Note the sun and moon opposite sides of SLEarth. How is there a full moon and why is it ALWAYS a full moon?) This would be a great feature to people who have a place that glows with local lightingness. ALSO, the new movie features in 1.6 will benefit greatly, if it is dark, there can be glowy tv just like IRL!!!
*Does Homer drool* Mmmmmmm... glowy television set. *Gurgles*

Nice idea, but there is a problem... Have you noticed that when you leave an island that lets say is always sunset or something, then when you transfer back to the mainland, you get that oh, 1 minute lag in the transition..
Fairly annoying, but it would be very, VERY bad if we fly through sims and literally going through 10 different day times. Wierd.
My two cents.

Aside from the jet lag problem of frequent time zone changes....

Aside from the chronic fatigue we'd all be experiencing as a result of constant time zone changing, the idea of property owners actually being able to control their property runs against the idea that Second Life is based on, that we are all part of a shared virtual reality in which we have common experiences.
Allow us to set the time on our property and next we'll be asking to keep our chat in and other people's chat out, not let other people's pushobject commands affect us without permission, and in general actually control other people's access to the computer resources we are paying for.
