How about changing the default action in the Edit Land tool to be Select Land, instead of Flatten Land? About 98% of the time when I go to Edit Land the first thing I want to do is select, and the last thing I want to do is inadvertently destructively modify the terrain because my finger was too twitchy.

From: Catherine Omega Isn't the default already Select Land? If you click the Land icon in the edit window, Select Land is active. But if you type CTRL-5, Flatten Land is active. I always type the shortcut, so it took me some hunting to figure out that we were both right!
