IM using a Nvidia FX 5200 and aparently this card will not support Ripple water, Shiney, or bump.

I love my card, it works great with all other games I play.
I would love to be able to see the world with the same quality as everyone else.

Maby rather than greying the options out, we should be able to enable them with a warning that it may crash, slow, the system?

Also Reflections in SL would be great. Ide love to be able to have Mirror In my house, Or better yet, Rear view mirrios on cars. That kind of thing.

I've got a FX5200 in the laptop I use for SL work occasionally; Ripple water is broken becuase of a shader problem (theres a file in the SL directory you can edit to re-enabled it, if you really want to.), but the other options work...

I predict that SL will have video on a prim before mirroring is ever a possibility. It's INSANELY slow to render in the type of 3D engine SL uses. Like, we're not talking low frames per second here, or even frames per MINUTE. We're talking MINUTES per FRAME.

I just upgraded to a new laptop with a 5700 instead of a Go5200. When I had the 5200, 32 meg, however... all those options were enabled. Silly question, but do you have your motherboard chipset drivers installed to enable AGP?

I had all options but ripple water too.

Thats why I started this Thread
08-09-2004 18:29
The Fx cards are buggy,, While one person says <"myne works fine.. then next says > myne dosnt work at all, Or half A$$.
Unfortunatly im in the "dosnt work at all" catagory.
Yes Agp is enabled. Ive coverd everything that I can find information on, EVEN msging a Linden, and i was told,
"well it seems the FX cards have prblems, Why dont you put it on the feature Suggestions?"

So here it is :-)

Btw, I'm posative that My drivers are good to go.,,
Ive check and rechecked...
And any other game runs amazing with this card, UT2k4, Battlefield 1942, RavenShield, Halo, etc.. They all work Great.

ALSO, I dual boot Winxp Pro and XP 64 Bit Beta, and all other games I play Run exactly the same on both, "Some faster fps on 64 but slower load times"
And SL is no exception, it runs exactly the same on both, Same buggs, same Greyd out check boxes. the only difference is that on 64 there seems to be a time limit on how long i can play b4 it slows extreamly down. and I hafto rlog.

Ok enough ranting, its clear that LL just needs to grab the Nvidia line, and start doin there thing,, Hek Ill donate an FX card If itll speed things up.

I've heard one person on this thread with a problem with nVidia cards... not many. I've never had a problem. Perhaps you could post your entire system config info, driver versions, AGP chipset version and so on? Then we might be able to help track the problem a bit more. There's also a good Troubleshooting resource for SL here:

Take care,

Jason, what brand of video card do you have? Which manufacturer actually made the board?

I'm not sure what to suggest. I've never really heard of anyone having a problem with the FX cards. The stuff you're talking about isn't a problem on my 5200 -- it works just fine. The "Ripple Water" checkbox is obviously greyed out for me, but shiny objects and bumpmapping are both supported by the FX series.

I don't mean to be rude, but you ARE sure you have a 5200, right? Is it a 5200 Go? A mobile version in a laptop?

What sort of other bugs are you experiencing? Is it just that you can't turn ripple water and env/bump mapping on, or are there actual video errors as well? If so, is it possible that your video card is overheating?

What's SL memory/VM consumption like under WinXP 64-bit when you say it starts slowing down? What is it like before that?

My card
08-10-2004 20:04
__________________

Its a PNY, the kinda weird thing is I cant find any information on the EXACT card. The one that pny shows has the same specs, 128MB, AGP8X, ...
The funny thing is, the one thats shown on the pny website has a VGA out and a S-video out, and there "pci" version has 2 vga outs, and an svid.
Myne Has 2 vga's and one svid...
But it IS agp. i know the difference, and its agp 8.

Yet it says rite on the card , "PNY Technologies FX5200 128MBDDR" also on a sepret sticker it says "VCGFX52APB"

Yet a google on these turn up nothing usefull.

The drivers are fresh from nvidias website.

I never recived the origonal software or box, as i took it from a customers computer because they upgraded to an ATI somthin or other. " I used to work at a computer shop, but dont atm simply because i moved"

and if it can handle running more than 2 strait days of ut2k4 and Ravin Sheild at a lan party, i doubt its over heating.

=The only Bugs are the fact that the boxes are greyd out.=

and as for 64...
Well i dont remember the exact numbers, but under 64 the vm is at X ammount, and after about 20 min of play it almost doubles. also cpu usage is up to 99 and sticks there, but i think it may be that way regardless, ide hafto reboot and look. If i stay in one area it will work for quite a while, but as soon as i start moving or "god forbid" teleporting, i pretty much hafto kill and restart the game so that I can get another smooth 20 min out of it.

64 and my card (update)
08-10-2004 20:12
OK under 64 yes the cpu usage stays at 99 at all times for process newview,

and i found a link to my EXACT card

http://www.superwarehouse.com/PNY_Verto_GeForce_FX_5200_128MB_Video_Card/VCGFX52APB/p/408417

its just a sales webpage, but it has a pic of my exact card, and the model number is exact.

Okay...
First, I assume, but want to confirm that you've uninstalled and reinstalled SL since getting your 5200. What video card did you have prior to getting this one? Have you reinstalled Windows since you installed this card?

I wonder if it's possible that part of SL is thinking that you're not allowed to use these settings because the last time the hardware detection code "told" it so, your hardware wasn't capable of rendering it.

Can you download the current Nvidia drivers, uninstall SL and your current video drivers, reboot, have your card detected as 'generic blahblah', then install your new drivers then? Then reinstall a fresh copy of SL -- does that work?

Yeah, it sounds like there's a memory leak on the 64-bit version. Ahh, beta software on first-revision hardware. What fun! :)

Yes i have reinstalled windows sense installing the card,
and I reinstalled sl, then went to nvidia and installed the drivers, then reinstalled sl, Then removed sl and the drivers,
and rebooted reinstalled the drivers, rebooted and reinstalled sl,

then.... found my latest mobo drivers, installed them, reinstalled video, and then sl.

Im at a loss.
