Middle Mouse button should set a "waypoint", and you should walk towards the waypoint as if you selected "Go Here", whether it's on a prim or not.

Some mouse drivers let you configure this currently. My middle mouse button makes me fly up! (It previously opened Inventory window.)

The middle mouse button should make a huge faerie castle appear around you, with a talking lion in it that you can shoot to get magic fruit, which makes your avatar invisible to griefers and also turns you purple.
Translation: I don't have a middle mouse button. I don't even have a mouse, I have a trackball. |

I don't have a middle mouse button. I don't even have a mouse, I have a trackball. I have a trackball as well but it does have a middle button which is also the scroll wheel. _____________________

Make all UI mapping 100% user-configurable
05-03-2006 16:26
ROFL. Great thread.
To summarize though, it's clear what all these posts are asking for: user-configuration of each and every UI event, including mouse events, so that you can make your middle mouse button (or your 1039th extended joystick button) do what the frick you want. It's no business of a virtual world designer to tell you what you're allowed to press to interact with their world. Physical UI triggers and virtual interface events are two entirely separate sets, and it should be up to the user to configure any mapping they like from one set to the other. Defaults are of course OK, as long as they can be overridden. Consider the needs of the disabled with their special physical interfaces if you need further convincing. Personally I would map middle mouse button to <MOVE-FORWARD> so that all avatar movement could be done with the mouse hand alone, but that just shows that I've got used to the interfaces in MMOGs like EverQuest and Anarchy Online. Ultimately there is no right or wrong, there's just what you're used to, and you should not be forced to change those preferences. Just imagine if each car manufacturer used different driving controls ... I've been beating this particular drum for over a year though, and there is no sign that LL has any interest whatsoever in implementing anything but the designer's own UI preferences. Pretty sad, really ... _____________________
