The Transfer of Non-Transfer Items

How many of you have created a 2nd or even 3rd SL account because of harrasment or just needed a change? Did you lose a lot of money in non-transfer items? Was the sacrafice worth it?

What if...

What if there was a "change name" feature that cost $9.95? You could change your avatar's name and it would be just like creating a new account - but with your non-transfer items. In every account that is attached to a banned IP is also banned, why not also give the accounts attached to the same IP some benifits? This would be sufficient proof that you are not hurting the creators of your non-transfer items in any way and everybody wins.

Things like Calling Cards of course would need to be disscused as how to make this the smoothest transition possible. But all in all, wouldn't it be nice?

Yet another reason...

For accounts on the same IP, there is no referal bonus. I did reffer my husband after all, who was at first leary. Controlling referal bonuses in this manner is of course understandable, however... I go back to my earlier point of so many restrictions to owning accounts on the same IP, but no bennifits.

the only problem with name changes I can see is -

people acting poorly/ harassing / creating drama .. racking up a list of enemies .. and then Changing their name to avoid their deserved bad rep.

people creating some scam allowing them to make a lot of money .. and then changing their name.


I dont think LL should encourage those.

I dont know if that means that a name change is a bad idea or not, just concerns I would have.

On the other hand. A lot of games will change your characters name if you are being harrassed. Perhaps a provisions for such wouldnt hurt.

And i dont think it should cost anything if its harrassment that seems uncontainable.

A limit on name changes would be acceptable. Once per account? Or Once a year?

I feel like bringing this up again because I'm thinking of opening a vote on it here soon...

I'm all for name changes. The way I suggest it should be done, however, is that you pay by the letter. This will prevent people from doing it frequently or abusing name changing.

I've wanted to be Flipper Peregrine instead of FlipperPA Peregrine for ages now. Let's say it costs L$500 per letter to change, or L$1000 to snag a new last name, or a combo of the above. I'd gladly pay L$1000 to change my name - or US$ as well.

Hm, that could work. Except that it unforunately might put someone who -really- does need the name change in a bind if they cannot afford it. I think perhaps a "so many name changeds per...." might still be a better option. Unfortunately -any- system with -any- benefits will be abused, someone will always find a way and exploit it. I think that many of our programs here in America for the people show that already, welfare for one... I do not want to see welfare go away, at least not without an alternative. There really are countless numbers of families who need this program, but saddly there's countless people who also abuse it.


Another thought on the name change though....
When the name is changed, the first name should be cancled, to be recycled. All calling cards for that name should be cancled, and the name made inactive for 3-6 months. I'm not sure how well this would work with the limited last names. But it's an idea...

I think changing a name for a price of say a new account is acceptable..and I think unlimited changing is acceptable. Some one voiced concern that it would be abused to avoid griefing or other bad behaviour, well the same can be said for creating alts...it's allowed and its done every single day, so what is the difference?

I personally don't want to lose any of my belongings. I've lost enough over the past 10 months due to glitches, not understanding the group deeding and or strange permission assignments (I can't transer some items I created O.o). I've often thought of creating an alt and staying with SL and trying to experience differently than I have as Nisa - which has spiraled miserably. I like the last name Stravinsky which isn't available anymore, so being able to change my first name, keep my items and or land, and start my life over a second time in second life would be such a plus.

To be able to change my name and keep all my items. WOW I would do it in a heartbeat!
I thought my name was cool at first but now i am reminded how it sounds so much like "call me never" LOL Somebody call me, I am lonely LOL!

I think the only thing to worry about with changing as often as you like is a) if it will have any effect on SL's servers because items may or may not be transfered and b) last names.

How about the one free change per year, and any subsequent changes you have to pay by the letter.

I would love to be able to change my name. When I first started SL on the trial account, I didn't know I would like it so much so I just used one of the alias names I have used in the past. Then in choosing a last name, I just picked one from the list that stuck out. Now I wish I had chosen differently. If all of the things in my inventory were transferrable, then I would be able to just switch everything over to a new acct and also sell myself my land. Unfortunately it can't be done because of the no-transfer issue of items. I really wish a one-time name change option were available. We really should be able to do that, whether it be because we are being harrassed or if we just want to change our name.

It really wouldn't create any more problems as far as supposed griefing goes. People can make as many alts as they want anyways. There are quite a few people who have 2 or more accts...one is a 'nice' av...and the other is a 'not so nice' av. So I think the arguement about griefing running rampant because of name changes is rather moot.

I'm probably not the first person to point out that people don't generally keep the same IP indefinately. People move, some providers change the IP frequently, people change services, and in general stuff happens. Why do we even track IP inthe first place and use it in referral bonuses in the first place? If someone wants to pay the US$10 for the L$1000 referral bonus and L$500 initial account for the alt let them, the exchange rate is such they'd be better off using GOM and buying lindens.

Tangent aside, using an IP as a unique identification is a bad idea. Though the general point of the proposal (allowing account name changes) is reasonable.

With such account registration restrictions,the option of changing name is the least that LL should do...Take my example:I'm the typical weathercock who quickly reached the "4 or 5" accounts limit due to "newbie ignorance" and with one active and other almost or defintely defunct by now...Let's say I want to start from the scratch and became known as a male avatar;since I can't create a new account anymore,I doubt than my current first name will put any virility in my character! So I think than one free name change by year or even paying for a new one are both two ideas to consider...
