Yeah but seriously, this was promised back in July of 2003. :(

Isn't it supposed to fix a bunch of stuff, or make a bunch of stuff better?

From various discussions, havok 2.0 also messes with camera movement, avatar movement, as well as the obvious stuff (better vehicles, more exact collissions, less deep-think problems).

Get philip on it, he has a BA in physics...

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?

If the hold-up has been the untangling of Havok 1 from the Second Life codebase so it can be isolated and upgraded to 2... I'd be happy to wait another month or two.

That's right. Wait more... And jump direct to Havok 3 instead!

Oh! That would be rich... All the "We want Havok 2 NOW!" chants, and you never get it! (You get something much better instead.)

:D

Let's get 1.5 working before we do anything else.

I thought the new permissions system was for 1.6 though.
Why do you need Havok 2? You wont notice a difference. Havok 2 is meant to solve the "deep think" problems with servers crashing when there are lots of complex objects colliding with each other. It wont bring you lots of nifty features. Not at first. Later on you might get useable joints.

I'm saying a full implementation of Havok :) Usable joints, better collision, etc. etc. etc.

And I bet you that most sims would see a major increase in FPS once havok 2 goes fully live (less problems with small cubes crammed in under a forgotten house or something)

not to mention the promised prim limit increase in physics enabled objects if Havok 2 does improve the FPS of sims.

I don't think Havok 2 is going to give us "better" vehicles. It should make existing ones run a little smoother.

I thought havok 2 was supposed to help put more people in a SIM.. Make it easier to move around when 30 people are gathered in 1 place.

What's this about need perms Eggy? How are they gonna work? I'm finally getting used to the perms. :(

Isn't the hold up on Havok2 because they are trying not to break everyone's existing scripts when they implement it?

Please don't say things like that, you're getting me worried. :-(

With a bit of luck though, they've placed an abstraction layer between Havok and all the SL code that they've written themselves, so only that layer may need to be adapted.

I don't know Havok personally, but the calls out of the LSL VMs would probably be into LL's own objects rather than into the Havok scene-graph system directly, I'd guess, and if so then LSL shouldn't be affected too much. Since Havok will be trying to be as agnostic as possible with respect to its applications (to give itself as wide a market as possible), the coupling into apps is probably pretty loose and most of the improvements will be transparent to LL. I'm hoping. :-)

And it won't be Havok 2.0 now... It's up to 2.3.1 already.

When the new havoc code branch is remerged with the main development trunk, there will be bugs. There will be uproar. There will be pain and grief and plywood prims exploding for no good reason at all.

But then then bugs will be fixed.

And we will not be much better off than we are now. Oh, there might be small imporovements. But most people won't see them... Only those residents that like to push the system to it's limits regularly will see a change.

BUT... It's a step. A step in the right direction: Onward to more features, greater stability, and a better world for us to work, live, and play in.

:)
