While chatting with the gang over a #secondlife, I came across an idea.

How about giving residents the option to OPT OUT OF DWELL. Completely. In other words...

(1) your land doesn't receive dwell payments or US$ incentives. Maybe still count for listing on popular places, or not.

(2) your SL *account* also doesn't count dwell for other people. So, if I opt out, I no longer count for dwell anywhere I go.

(3) people who opt of of dwell maybe get a tier discount, say 10%.

This would give people the opportunity to opt out of the "spammable pool" of dwell generators.

Perhaps the "Linden Picks" could also be picked from only the people who opt out of dwell and create simply for the love of creating. This could be the non-Dwell reward.

What do ya think?

Dwell has been so confusing to me....

and I know I can be quite the ignoramus .....but the dwell lists are always screwed up anyway.. with days going on where the dwells haven't been updated....I think the Lindens need to do something about dwell....your idea sounds great...but I also think dwell needs to be explained in detail. Because quite frankly, I've been playing since July and STILL don't get it. *Call me stupid*

Get rid of the RL$ incentive. Add more to the L$ bonus.

People will still farm dwell as long as it shows so they can feel they are popular.

I'd love to opt out - and then promptly stay at my favorite club, lagging them for free!

Here's Haney's explanation on dwell and what it is, how it works, and so on:

Here's a discussion on some of the problems with the current dwell system:

please let's not discuss the problem here. search the general form for "dwell" and "abuse" to read the dozens of threads that describe the problem over and again. it will amuse you to see the perps admitting that they game the system but believe that it's okay to do. blah blah blah

this idea has some merit. i would easily opt out of the dwell pool for a tier discount. i won't care if they pay dwell incentives with real money if i can believe that i'm opting out of supporting it. it's like not chekcing the box on my tax forms to donate money to the next presidential campaign. i mean really...

Flip,

Part of the reason we have dwell is to encourage people to interact. Do you have a method, along with your suggestion, to replace the interaction effect of dwell?

People are going to interact naturally. Even the people who like to build don't tend to NEVER go out; they do interact with others, albeit not as much as many social butterflies. So, I don't think that encouraging people to interact is a problem any longer (if it ever was).

SL has changed from what it was in its early days - since June when I joined for sure, probably much more since prior to January (though I can' speak to that a all).

Simple interaction is certainly no longer one of the top five goals LL has for SL - if it is, they need to reevaluate and reprioritize the goals. The interactions that are evident and encouraged in SL are now more complex than just simple gatherings .... the economics of SL has ensured that, Likewise, the "dwellnor system" of incentives has changed the essence of interactions - correct me if I am wrong.

Back to ya'll..
