Okay, the deal is this, the wireless base station I use to connect my good computer (upstairs) to the internet just died today. As a result I'm on a 400mhz machine with a whopping 8mb video card so I'm not about to try SL on that.

Anyway, I now as a result can't contact people in-world to say where I am, and it could be a while before the base-station gets fixed (especially if they insist on not sending me out a replacement right away).

What I would love for is a tool on the site (you know like the land management section of your user account) to message people on your friend's list.

I only have MSN/AIM addresses for two of my friends atm, and I can't get at that as my stupid IM client won't show my contacts if it's not connected (even though it caches them locally!). You always think that a client which encrypts its data is a good thing...until you want to get at it yourself and it won't decrypt it! BAH!

But yeah, simple tool, very handy for things like going on holiday and stuff. All it would do is send a friend an IM as though you'd sent it yourself.
Could even be made more advanced so that you can read IMs you received while you weren't in-world and respond to those as well. It could count you as online while you're doing this, but only for the purposes of IMs (ie if someone sends an IM and you viewed the IM panel in the last 5 minutes then it won't say "User offline", but you won't appear online in their friends list).

I'll second that. My laptop just went 'poof' last weekend and a user has left me some inventory (going by the automatic e-mails I have just received). Now I won't have my laptop back for a couple of weeks and all I want to do is say thankyou.... :(

Excellent feature idea.. it has my vote.

I've had this problem myself and I'm actually going to make a scripted solution, using email. When rezzed, the email to IM object sends you an email with a code in it, and then you can email it back whenever you like to send an IM.

e.g. you receive an email called "Email2IM initialise" that says something like
From: someone
Hello, Thingy Bob! Here is the activation key: *235478282*

and then you can reply with an email something like
From: someone
*235478282*//Firstname Lastname//Hello there, I'm sending a message while not logged in!

The object receives this and sends IMs to the person concerned. (It should check to see whether they're online first I suppose.) That would be something like...
From: someone
Email2IM: Hello Firstname Lastname, Thingy Bob has sent you the following message...
Email2IM: "Hello there, I'm sending a message while not logged in!"
Email2IM: Please reply to Thingy Bob directly via the IM tool as I can't hear IMs.

That's actually a very simple script really. I've made far more complicated email control scripts so I'm sure it won't take me too long. Of course, I have some stupid work do to go to this evening which won't help.

N.B. I won't be charging for this, well, maybe L$1 so I can keep track of who takes it from my home area and pay for the texture, and I'll post the script up in the scripting library.

There are heroes in SL!!

That'll be great... once I get my laptop back anyway, but it'll be a real boon for being able to communicate with people in world whilst I'm at work..

Well worth $1 or $10 or... more.. :)

Agh! You know the problem here - I wasn't thinking straight earlier on - it's that there's no easy way to get an agent key out of an agent name. So this device will either have to have the key of the agent, or access to a name to key database (and I don't have one).

This is a little annoying. Most people don't know their own keys, though you can always ask them to find them out.

I'll see if I can think of a solution to this.

Email-2-IM may fit your needs. Comes with device to get your friends keys.

There's always somebody else who's done it first...

Still, I'm finding it interesting to write the script. I'll test it this evening.

But, also if is cheap, Is more expensive than future Ordinal Malaprop script. :D

Also, I'm not shure, but I think there is a function to obtain avatar key passing full name.

Well, me too I would like to try to build this script.
