There have been plenty of rumblings about the Welcome Area being outdated and not showing SL's best face to new users lately. So I propose a new Linden contest in which groups can work on buiilding a new Welcome Area, perhaps for cash prizes like the parade floats recently.
Let groups with great scripters, builders, and people with an eye for what's visually appealing work together to build SL's next welcome mat, complete with the first few activities critical to someone entering SL.
This seems like a win-win-win that will benefit the community, give the welcome area a much needed facelift, and reward the people who can make SL an inviting place for new residents to explore.

TinaStar, this is an excellent idea! they could do the same thing that they did with the Game Devs.. set up a server or two for competitors to compete on. grab a 1/4 sim or something and build the whole entire thing... just like you said. i would get a big kick out of seeing the different designs! ..which could help as well.. have voting stations (as opposed to dwell) for the community to voice their opinion. then LL could make their decision with our votes in mind. ..of course, i also support this idea because: 1) i agree, the Welcome Area needs a serious update 2) i want to enter!

This is a good idea, I endorse it.
James Miller was actualy talking about a redesign awhile back, and had a small model made up. So after frustraiting him for a couple minutes I decided just to make my own.
Alot of the welcome area is fine, but alot of it needs some rethinking also.
