Private / lightweight copies

This feature would make life so much easier...

Introduce a second kind of "copy" of an item; a lightweight, or private, copy. (A bit like a link or shortcut to the real one.)

This copy only exists in your inventory while you still have the original. If you transfer or delete the original, all of your private copies will disappear.

This would be amazingly useful for creating multiple outfit folders containing the same item. It would provide a way for the same item to exist in multiple places in the user's inventory, without actually allowing the user to make multiple real copies that they could then sell separately.

Rezzing

I don't know whether or not it should be possible to rez private copies separately (e.g. if you make private copies of a house and then rez them all).

If this allows the user to defeat the content creator's wishes then I guess there would have to be an additional permission for whether private copies are allowed.

Probably it's simplest if rezzing or wearing a private copy is equivalent to rezzing or wearing the original, so of course you could still only rez one of them.

Yes, we need this under whatever name.

This has been brought up several times.

Look for "multiple instances", "symbolic links", "soft links", "aliases", "references", ...

If you rez the object into the world, the links would be grayed out. If you gave it away, the links would vanish. If you wear it, all the links would show "worn".

Argent, that's exactly what I had in mind. Thanks for putting it so clearly!
