Please! Will someone do something to enable me to play Windows Media audio on my land? In particular, the amazing KISS 100, The Station For A Fun Young London!

I'm sick of the mediocre SL radio stations - give me real music to play to my guests!

Radio Station

I would suggest that you speak to the owners of the radio station. If they do not provide a stream which you can play in SL, perhaps they would if you asked them.

Commerical radio stations are alas unlikely to change...

If we could stream Real Audio it would be magnificant. We could stream BBC stations, for example.

Except that we'd have RA streams which are, let's face it, hideous.

this isn't much of a solution but you could always stream it in a program behind sl and post the address on your land if nothing else works.

is there a station for an old stuffy boring London? :D

Capital's alright, compared to the utterly lethargic Heart 106.2

Capital is for early teen London.

The worst are Virgin and Heart - they are just dull.

I still want a way of streaming BBC Radio 4 to my parcel - surely with Philip Linden's background this must be possible ;)

Roberta, LOL, that's a great way to call upon precedent.

Process is so applicable. :)

I have liked some UK radio stations, like the underground garidge/drum 'n' bass type thingamaroos.

World radio is cool, just to see how different cultures approach it with formats and stuff. Even if I can't understand all the languages, there is a colored flavoring to be enjoyed.

Other Stream Types...

Just FYI,

The MP3 format and related streams (like SHOUTcast) are open formats. That means that anyone can create tools that use them.

WMA, RA, QT, and others are prorprietary formats; and require licensing fees if you want to incorporate their "player" technology into another program (like the SL client).

So unless y'all want to start paying LindenLab the large amounts of $$ that Apple/Microsoft/Real would likely try to charge them for developing this, I don't think its gonna happen soon.

Take care,

Funny, I thought the MP3 format was licensed out by the Franhouffer Institute... I know I didn't spell it correctly.

An official MP3 encoder needs a liscence, an open decoder doesn't. Which is why we have shout/icecast.

Also, I imagine getting an application to play WMA files in MacOSX might be difficult.

Just FYI, with a little trickery I was able to rebroadcast KISS 100 in MP3 (ShoutCast) format using my own dedicated server. This is an option if one wanted to set up their own shoutcast server or subscribe to one.

I could plug in my FM radio and play it over Shoutcast - I've done it before. But with the limited resources I have access to, it's not an option :(
