Looking at the world map, I see that SL keeps track of fairly large objects and uses them to give a rough idea of the layout of objects in a simulator. I would like to propose the following:
  1. Allow us to have really high draw distances for land. Two-kilometer range would be nice.
  2. Take the data from the map overlays and use it to (very roughly) draw shadows on land in the distance. If I'm right, this will have the effect of making it look like we can see stuff well over a kilometer away - but we'll just be looking at a rough approximation, not the real thing. If necessary (and feasible) you could even approximate the larger features of the structures themselves with blank-texture, fog-colored surfaces. I don't expect anything high-res here.
  3. Other things it would be nice to have selectable draw distance for: Clouds and trees.
