Toying with the "smooth zoom" at the extreme limits in 1.5 -- We work on a LOT of VERY small objects and details in our avatars...
The FOV changing at the end of the zoom limit and the fact that the zoom control 'coasts' after your mouse stops moving is absolute *hell*...
I realize some may like it, I understand that, so PLEASE PLEASE make it optional, an option back to the old limited zoom? (without the FOV change and 'coasting'?)
Working on an avatar head as a test here I literally got -sick and dizzy- working on it, and the inability to get the zoom right where you want it (without it 'coasting') was UNBELIEVABLY mind-numbingly frustrating.
I spoke to Don Linden a bit about this, and he said he'd suggest it to you : PLEASE make it optional, Richard...
This will SERIOUSLY limit the amount of time we'll be able to work on avatars without having to -walk away from the computer-... Anyone else who builds small, I realize at first it may seem that you have more zoom range, but I really would like to have the option to NOT have it 'coast' and NOT change FOV, if I'm working for an extended period of time.
I know my past record for getting checkboxes into the UI has been abysmal. Please, please make a consideration this time.

I share Michi's frustrations with this new "feature" on the 1.5 test server.
When zooming in extremely close, the camera becomes decoupled from mouse movement for a short time. It gives the camera an uncontrolled feel, making it more difficult to acquire a good angle and zoom for working on smaller objects.
An option to use the "old style" of zoom would be good.

er, and I believe it's a change in DOF that happens, not FOV, sorry.

I didn't get a chance to check out the preview, but if what you're describing is accurate, it sounds like it'd be hell on my motion sickness. This sort of radical change needs to be optional.
Also, the "inventory items can be dropped through alpha textures" thing seems like kind of a bad idea too. I've already had problems with that. It seems like having a toggle in the Tools menu to disallow that behavior would be far more useful than it just being set a certain way.

It only happens at extreme zooms, but it starts happening well before the 'limit' of the 'old' zoom. So if you're working close up, yeah, it's going to make you feel pretty seasick.

Signed, I build some stuff with really tight tolerances and I don't need anything screwing that up.

I agree and I have no idea what the lindens aversion to optional features or heck even an advanced mode with more of the default features made optional. Though I spose that is a topic for another thread.
back on track, I endorse this!

I guess its because each optional feature is a new checkbox they have to add to the gui but...
... theres no particular reason why they couldnt put new/advanced values into a simple tableformat:
CoasterView True NoOutsideScriptsCeiling 4000
... or worst case just dump them in an xml file that we can edit by hand.

Edit: and for customization of a privatesim, worst case have a "blackbox" in the corner that the owner can talk to:
"SetNoOutsideScriptsCeiling 4000" "ShowConfig"

Well, from what I hear, even Kelly Linden can't stand CoasterView. I just hope it isn't something that's "too tough to change back".
Really, I don'tknow about the whole 'no room in the GUI' stuff... There's a lot of room in the GUI. But it isn't only the Lindens who have a problem with options, but it seems that whenever some of us pipe up to have a feature made optional, there are a bunch of people who for some reason don't like the idea of someone having an option.
I'm waiting for someone to come into this thread, say that they infact -like- the skid-out zoom function, and that there are more important things the Lindens should be working on like Havok 2.0, and we're just a bunch of whiners anyways, and why do we care so much about cartoon characters anyways, and if we don't like it we can always just uninstall, because that takes care of every problem and is also a witty retort.
This will then be followed up by a mocking post in the "What's New in SL forum", titled "OMG MY ZOOM MOVES A LITTLE BIT I'M GOING TO GO KILL MYSELF!", filled with replies that are just copies of these posts, but in all caps.
... I'm getting good at this.

I'd do that Michi...
But I've not been able to get into the preview yet, so I've not seen it...

Bumping this, because in the latest build of the preview, even after Kelly Linden agreed that it is headache inducing and sickening, it's still there.
RE: PLEASE GET RID OF THE STUPID FANCY ZOOM AT EXTREME ZOOM LEVELS.
IT *WILL. MAKE. CLOSE. UP. BUILDING. ALMOST. IMPOSSIBLE* to do without WALKING AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER TO REGAIN YOUR BALANCE every 10 minutes.
RICHARD: OPTION THIS. I know a LOT of people who are NOT going to let up on this until we have the option to make it GONE. Yeah it looks whiz-bang "neato" to all the people who are just going to be observing. But to builders this is going to be NAUSEA INDUCING.
P.S. - it has NOTHING to do with camera springyness. If you haven't seen it, you just haven't zoomed in close enough.
