Base LSL restrictions on land ownership rather than distance.

Linden Lab: Why can't I do what I want with my land? Why can't I do what I want with my land even if I own an entire server? Or two servers? Or four? How much do we have to pay you in order for you to trust us? We are not griefers. We are content developers, some of us are even RL professionals spending several hours a day on SL, and some even want to do business with our content using SL as a platform. If the reason why I can't, say, rez an object 100 meters away from me, rather than 10, is because it "could be used for griefing", well I'm sorry to disappoint you but I am not a griefer and that is no excuse. If I pour a lot of money into your wallet every month I expect the right to develop unfetteredly. LL, please consider reviewing the arbitrary restrictions you impose on us. You could start by basing things on land ownership instead of arbitrary distances. Griefers dont usually own land, you know, and no one forces me to visit them if they do. You could also charge us for bandwidth usage (you know, like every decent hosting provider does) instead of telling us that we can't have outgoing XML-RPC because we would use it to DoS someone, or that I can't use llEmail more than once every 20 seconds because I might be an evil spammer. Stop thinking of this as a social world where a bunch of idiots come to "have fun" by letting their avatars be automatically animated by a "dance machine" at a "club". Cater to the developers with a trusting, professional attitude, and let us cater to the clueless masses ourselves. Some of us want to run our own continents, instead of sitting around watching a plastic doll pretending it knows how to dance. Considering that each server we add nets LL around the same as 100 basic accounts and 20 premium monthlies, I believe we deserve a little more trust and respect from you than we are currently getting. Thank you.

I endorse this.
If LL truely wants SL to be used for different kinds of development, alot of these limitations need to be changed.

I agree to a point.
Our LSL access shouldn't be as restricted as it is, and more restrictions are being planned as we speak. It's stifling creativity, or forcing us to be 'more' creative by finding ways around the system that just create more problems for LL.
Not only should the 'object creation rules' be less restrictive than the present 10m limit on our own land, we should be able to get permission from whomever owns the land the object is trying to be created on. Or from whomever the owns the land the object doing the creating is over. And 10m should ALWAYS be allowed, no matter what.
llSitTarget shouldn't be limited at all, as there's no TECHNICAL need for it, and if it IS still restricted, the llTeleport function LL has promised to 'replace' any restrictions they're planning should be put in place BEFORE further restrictions are made, not promised for 'future' consideration, where it can be brushed aside like so many other things LL hasn't delivered on yet.
I understand that things take time. I understand that sometimes things happen, or precautions have to be made, but there's a long laundry list of things LL hasn't done, or promised "after the next build" for several builds now. They should stop worrying about making more problems for scripters, and start worrying about the things they haven't delivered on yet.
However, I DON'T agree that we should be charged for bandwidth. I pay a monthly fee. A sizeable monthly fee at that, especially for someone who's between jobs at the moment. I shouldn't be charged even MORE for the fact that I create scripts! I pay the same money as everyone else. Why am I to be penalized for using the only method provided for sim-to-sim communications? That's like charging a texturer extra every time they upload a texture that's already in the database that they could have used instead. Until LL provides an alternative to llEmail for sim-to-sim communication, one that suits them better, they certainly better not start charging for my use of it.

The day LL starts charging for usage of LSL or when LSL is affected by the amount of land owned (ala prim count) is the day I leave this "game". ==Chris

From: someone The day LL starts charging for usage of LSL or when LSL is affected by the amount of land owned (ala prim count) is the day I leave this "game". Oh no, lets hope it doesn't come to the whole 'prim count' variety of restriction. The 'land usage' thing that was mentioned was more of a "let us scripters do whatever the hell we want on our own land, without restrictions" rather than a "limit us based on how much land we own" thing. The day the latter happens is ALSO the day I leave for good.

One way to impliment this could be to make it possible to assign scripts to land, and give the land-assigned scripts unrestricted access to anything over that land.
(This solves the problem of having a script somewhere on your land doing wierd stuff to your land, like rezing prims all over the shop, and you've no idea where you left it to turn it off...)

When an object is moved there seems to already be checks for both z-axis (as you can't put a prim too far underground) and for sim borders (as if it goes offworld, it gets returned)
---------
An additional check could be added - if ((move's magnitude > 10) && (object's owner != land's owner(start point + displacement vector))) disallow move
------
Of course, how much this would affect runtime is the question - it involves not only 2 branches, multiple math operations, but also 2 database queries which could potentially be a bottleneck.

I should add that I wasnt thinking you would always have to pay for bandwidth, only if you consumed excessive amounts of it. My ISP lets me DL 3 gigs per month. After that, its metered. I just want LL to lay off the social mediation thing and act more like a hosting service. Social problems shouldn't be solved by castrating developers. My main problem is that LL made these rules when the world was tiny and it was impossible for someone to own a whole simulator or a multi-sim continent. When I own a whole server, I expect to have full control over it. Namely, being able to alt-zoom EVERYWHERE, for large scale building. Scaling back from the private island concept, why can't I alt-zoom everywhere on my land if I own a very large parcel? Ownership gives me rights. Distance is a totally unrelated concept.

Out of curiousity
What kindw of projects are you doing that interact with the real world? I know you've made intimations of that before, and now you got me curious!!

Well, while objects can and probably will eventually interact with the real world, the more immediate application of usable RPC and Email is accessing large databases of information stored outside of SL, from SL, or accessing scripts that perform calculations better than a script in SL can. More effective AI, for example.

RL projects that come immediately to mind: - Pay for land / objects with Paypal - Vendor stats tracking - banking - blogging - in-game weather / stocks / etc
