Voice chat

What would be really nice would be voice chat, and you can only hear a person speaking if you're close to the person and the further away you go from the person the quieter it gets, and perhaps if someone like screams into the microphone or something it makes it quieter.
And also you would have to hold down a button to speak.

The day that voice chat becomes standard is the day I quit SL.

This is exactly what we need. MORE LAG!! sorry for the caps. Although this would be a nice addition, doing so without lag is mostlikely impossible. Blessed Be

It wouldn't lag at all, the sound quality would be reduced enough to prevent lag and good enough to prevent distortion and such. Also you would only load the steaming sound from the person speaking if you were close enough to them. Sound doesn't lag at all really.

This has nothing to do with my listening to other people talking. I do not want to have to use a voice chat system in SL, nor do I want to find myself treated differently because I refuse to use one. If voice chat becomes common, that will be the choice I'm faced with.

Just say you don't have a microphone. Or perhaps there could be a text to speach thing put in.

Given the reactions that are seen on other MMORPGs to both of these approaches, I'm not hopeful.

And niether am I, and I don't even play other MMORPGs.

The sound would have to go through SL's servers, and that would probably add 25% to their total bandwidth requirement.

It's not really all that interesting.
The only difference is, you can tell more easily what context a person is speaking in.
Hard to tell sometimes when it's typed....that is unless you are very informative.
