I was chatting with the nice folks on #secondlife IRC, when something someone joked about gave me the idea of being able to write notes on the map. There are many ways this could be done and would add some informative customizability to the otherwise static map. My best idea would be to be able to stick a push-pin on the map (with a cute little icon of a map pin, user definable color) that perhaps can open a small notes window when clicked. This would be somewhat like the notes feature on calling cards. This idea came to me as a way for people to make their own notes, so I haven't really considered way in which to share them with others. Could be that they are stored in inventory under a map pin folder, similar to landmarks. Also, to prevent people from being a little overzealous with marking eleventybillion things on their maps (and creating more asset server load?) the pins should always be visible. That way, when there are too many, it is beneficial to the user to delete unnecessary ones. So, anyone care to brainstorm on this?

I'm all for this. I need to be able to mark off which sims are crap when I lose my vehicle upon crossing into them. Failing to implement this, please fix the grid. Please?

I use a screenshot of the grid* in Photoshop as a tool for mapping out and planning where my vendors should go. Having this functionality available in the SL client itself would be most helpful.
(*actually several screenshots pasted together, with viewerart.ini edited to remove the green dots.)

Somebody for the love of god add a checkbox that allows me to remove the telehub icon. When you zoom out far enough, it covers the whole freaking sim. the island sims look particularly nasty with it on. Nice feature btw. Could easily be integrated with current landmark code. Add a new pushpin button for it on the landmark dialog, and show the description field.

Original and Eggy's ideas would both be nifty to have.
There was a suggestion awhile back about having user definable markers and icons that can be put on the map, and given to other users.
Same thing could be switched and used for this as well.

I often found myself wandering in large circles as I randomly looked around

How about a map checkbox to show all your landmarks on the map?

I wouldn't want all of my landmarks on the map... I have too many. But if our personal Picks (as in that tab in our Profile where we list the places we like) were mapped, that would be great. As well as any we choose to add by hand or from an existing landmark object.
Great idea!

this suggestion deserves way more attention than it's getting.
