As for standing on the vehicle, do you care more about the movement or looking cool? For the latter, you can just sit on an attached prim and have a script play a standing animation. You won't be able to move, but it looks nice.

I think that with a clever scripted attachment it could be done. Such as a tether of sorts, to freeze the avatar to the vehicle. Or you could sit on a walking prim that used something similar to llSetPos() (or the way to do this within a linked set for only one prim. Gotta see wiki) to move you in small steps.

Wait, this could be the massive 13 hour long shift I just got off of where all my co-workers abandoned me to try and deal with a 1400+ unit shipment but... I vaguely recall that I did indeed move along with moving objects when standing on them with no special seating or what not.
I could be wrong though.

If you can't move the ship, move the universe around the ship. the sit moving might be interesting. Kind of a switch sitting positions with out standing. hmm

I could be wrong though. No I've done it too, on a rickety airship, but it's real shaky. You fall through the floor and/or get booted a lot if you try to walk too much. I think the way to do it is to have another, non-physics object inside the vehicle, to act as a "floor" ...but I could be wrong. It would be REALLY DAMN COOL if you could do this easily though.
