That would prevent newbies selling freebies for 500L.

Yes, but if you'd actually read those other threads, you'd have seen people pointing out that you could just SAY, "pay me $100 and I'll give this to you." The two transactions need not be one and the same for both to take place. There's no technical workaround for this, at least not one that would be REMOTELY fair.
So what I propose IS that they do this -- and in fact, they ARE apparently "working with" the Creative Commons people to update the permissions system to a fully Creative-Commons compliant model. (Of course, whether "working with" means a "we looked at their website" or a general back-and-forth sharing of ideas, or "oh god, those Linden people are emailing me again" is another matter. ) There's only so far that technology can go to enforce or prohibit human behavior, though. At least if CC-compliant licencing is desired, that is. So it should still be DONE, but it just needs to be made explicitly clear that just because the SYSTEM doesn't prohibit you from making derivitive works and then profitiing from them, or not sharing your changes to the original work, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's okay to do so, and that you will be breaking the law if you do it.To the "but we have to limit people's ability to violate my copyright rather than punishing them if they do it" crowd: no, this would be optional. If you want to sell a closed-source script, a non-editable object or item of clothing, that's totally cool. What Creative Commons licences do is allow creators to share and tailor their desired licencing terms to state what may then be done with their shared works. It's a tool to foster collaboration and to benefit the community. Now, there needs to be some better (and more transparent!) system for dealing with copyright violations and IP theft. If I release LSL code under a noncommercial licence, then find that someone has taken it and then used it in a commerical product, (and this has happened) I want to have some kind of recourse available to me. Maybe if the police blotter was updated more frequently and complimented by "Police Blotter: Copyright Squad" or some such thing? I don't know. I at least want there to be some mechanism beyond hiring a lawyer and subpoenaing Linden's records. _____________________

I'm not looking for a debate...
THis item may only be given away as a gift.... Where's the debate? Simple, VERY simple to program, a no copy "sell as an original for $0 Linden" read gift here) check box. You have now given the only copy you have away as a gift, regardless of who buys it. How many times do us designers do this already for good friends? We build a friend an object they are looking for, sell it for $0 Lindens. HERE is the key the "Sell as an original $0Lindens" Not a difficult concept, and one that already exists ingame, why give an anvil moving parts? Refine the one we already have.Let the Lindens fix REAL problems for now... like object rotation. To name one.... _____________________

Give me money and I'll give you a copy of this item I can only give away.
Give my vending machine money and it will give you a copy of this item I can only give away for free. Try to get around both of those, and it is no longer a single programming change. And you can STILL get around it even so. (Read the other threads listed above to see even more examples of why this can't work. No point in everyone writing them all over again here.) I have no beef against the idea, but no one has yet come up with a system that we can't find a way to easily circumvent. Many have tried, all have failed. If you have a new implementation idea, test it against the other threads. If it passes, post it here, if just for the challenge of hacking it. But post something that has already been shot down, and we'll just say "BANG. Killed in previous thread." ![]() _____________________
